Tor and i2p are hidden network project.
Hyphanet (Freenet) is also once of hidden network project in development now.
Qubes os has Whonix template, and I challenge to make i2p version of Whonix template.
What is your opinion at Hyphanet (Freenet)?
Do you think Hyphanet (Freenet) version of Whonix template is worth it?
I don’t know if it’s better to route Freenet over Tor or not, I guess it’s better to ask Freenet devs about this (IRC: #freenet on irc.libera.chat) or maybe on Tor/Whonix forum instead of Qubes OS forum.
Hyphanet is quite old and antiquated. The original developer (Ian Clarke) is working on something new, which is also called Freenet. Whereas Hyphanet is more of an anonymity network and can only work with static webpages, the new freenet should be able to distribute anything that can be written in web assembly code (or so I think; I’m not a programmer). So I think we should just wait until that is released.
Why?
By official faq, Freenet (not Hyphanet) is not provide to default anonymity.
Design of Hyphanet is surely old and antiquated, but Hyphanet is designed for default anonymity.
Anonymity: While the previous version was designed with a focus on anonymity, the current version does not offer built-in anonymity but allows for a choice of anonymizing systems to be layered on top.
Don’t you think Hyphanet is safer than Freenet?
And Freenet is newly and alpha stage, so it almost has no many contents .
But Hyphanet has even more contents than Freenet.
Well when I said Hyphanet has built in anonymity, I sorta meant it in a bad way. Due to how Hyphanet works, people are literally deterred from using it because the general folk feel like they have to host illegal material on their computers.
I can’t predict how things will pan out but the hope is that Freenet will be more general (and, because of no built-in anonymity, there will be no stigma around it), so it will gain more adoption. Anyone who wants anonymity can still have it (once the relevant technology is implemented).
I tried using Hyphanet for a few weeks, but then I stopped booting up my node because I failed to see the point frankly. That being said, you can still run Hyphanet if you want to, just use it in an appvm.
Well that’s because Freenet hasn’t even launched yet. Also (and I’ve only perused the clean spider index) Hyphanet doesn’t seem to have anything that useful (maybe I looked in the wrong place). At least on i2p you can browser reddit, hackernews, wikipedia and torrent stuff.
Unfortunately, Hyphanet has surely not more non NSFW contents, and more contents on Hyphanet is being old and antiquated.
But many members of i2p development team are probably Russian, many eep sites have been decreasing since 2022.
But Hyphanet old contents don’t decrease, remaining forever, it is advantage of Hyphanet about i2p.
Well that’s because Freenet hasn’t even launched yet.
Freenet is still in alpha stage, newest version is 0.0.6.
How many years will it take before Freenet is ready to use?
This is why I like Hyphanet/Freenet as well, and it’s why I’m looking forward to Freenet’s release.
I don’t know, why don’t you come over to the matrix chat room and ask there. The main developer regularly answers questions. He said the network should be online soon™.
Also I must apologise now as I realise I don’t fully understand the reasoning behind the gateway architecture that whonix provides, so I shouldn’t really comment on whether other things (i2p, freenet) need it or not.
After 2022 war, Russian Government started censoring the Internet.
So there is not freedom of speech in Russia today, i2p development is also stagnation.
You asked for an opinion and valuation of Hyphanet, so I provided it. If you would rather prefer that I did not provide it, simply do not ask the questions to begin with so neither of our time is needlessly wasted.
Sorry to bust the party, but this thread is technically off-topic in this forum. Please move to a more appropriate forum like the Whonix Forum. Thank you for understanding.
