Solving the Qubes Whonix knowledge gap on the forum?

Hi :wave:,

I’ve noticed many questions about Whonix going unanswered on the forum, and I find that a bit troubling. I tend to gravitate toward unanswered posts, so the pattern stood out to me.

The reason this worries me is that the Whonix user community is arguably the most vulnerable from an OPSEC standpoint—for some people, their lives are literally at stake. Accurate guidance and reliable information are therefore crucial. :flushed:

I’m wondering if we could brainstorm a solution together. Would it be helpful to invite a knowledgeable member of the Whonix community to host a weekly “office‑hours” session?

Alternatively, should we create a dedicated Qubes‑Whonix sub‑forum?

I’d love to hear any ideas you might have! :sparkling_heart:

Please also tell me if I’m seeing this wrong. I’m open to feedback :grinning:

There is already a category in the Whonix Forum:

Ok, then I assume it’s a good idea that I point all unanswered questions in the user support forum to Qubes Whonix support? Maybe users miss this because it doesn’t show up in
Categories on the left side of the panel?

You don’t see it on the sidebar because it’s not part of this site, but rather the whonix site.

Yes, but since the Whonix Forum is an external URL with its own Discourse instance, creating an account there is also required in order to answer queries.

@SteveC & @FranklyFlawless thanks :slight_smile:

So if I see unanswered posts I am going to tell the OP’s to go Qbes-Whonix.
I just felt frustrated because their questions went unanswered and I can’t really help them.
I’ve tried but I notice I keep screwing up. So I will refrain from that in the future :sweat_smile:

The reason is that Whonix is a different product from QubesOS, and has its own support and forums.

This is a little bit overstretched, as Whonix is not a commercial product and has no official/paid support.
A lot of people with minimal technical knowledge show up with “entitled” and sometimes insulting requests on this forum. Extending this to Whonix would be useless.
What I mean is that if Whonix recommends you connect to Tor directly, without using a VPN, it is pointless + “a waste of time” to talk about “I want to connect through N VPN’s before going through Tor” or “I want to route Tor through my VPN”,
If one cannot set up Whonix in VirtualBox or KVM in a Linux distro, and use the snapshot feature to achieve the same features as a “disposable qube” … then one cannot emit questions on Whonix. One can only follow the instructions.

Yes, you’re right I phrased that wrong. What I meant is that I hoped someone from Whonix would come over to help out here maybe for a brief session. But I see your point :slightly_smiling_face:

Probably some people do yes. But there are also valid questions. Take @snorkelcake’s question for example Whonix workstation disposables are acting strangely.

This user has been using Qubes for years and has a valid question. I’ve been going around the bend to help this user in a creative way (due to my own lack of knowledge). But the fact is I cannot, really.

And I’ve seen more questions like that. I completely understand nobody is entitled to an answer, it just frustrates me sometimes to see such questions go unanswered. Especially ones where anxiety comes in to play - I went trough this phase too, too petrified to even go on the forum and ask a question. I guess these feelings of frustration boil down to being highly empathic and being new to forums :pensive: . I hope you understand @barto :wink:

PS. I royally screwed up here: How do I use Whonix as network?. Yet another Whonix question, I think the OP ran away… :joy:

No, because everyone has different availability and timezones.

@FranklyFlawless

I sometimes have Lumo AI spellcheck my comments and give me some suggestions.
I went with this comment without really thinking about it - oops :pleading_face:
Shame Shame… :see_no_evil:
But at least @snorkelcake got an answer and I learned my lesson… so it’s all good I guess :blush:

I don’t get it, sorry, Qubes is Qubes, Whonix is Whonix, where is the knowledge gap? You don’t need Whonix in Qubes, just like you don’t need Debian or Fedora (except dom0 atm)
On this note, its good to make use of the Whonix forum and the Tor Forum! (or even the Debian one!) Its probably asking a lot of Patrick as he is also trying to work with KVM, Virtualbox and his own distro. He has done alot for qubes though, and there is an interesting thread on the whonix forum where he has a list of “incompatibilities”

It bears repeating that Patrick has asked that Qubes-Whonix questions
should be addressed to the Whonix forums.

I never presume to speak for the Qubes team.
When I comment in the Forum I speak for myself.
