Ok I’m sorry for talking your ear off. Last question I promise! (Probably not hehe). Is the default home page considered dom0? Is there a way to check if my usbs are connect to dom0? Everytime. I plug in my mouse it says “target: dom0” but it also says the source is “sys-usb”? I swear I tried to read the papers and articles about it but I’m still confused. I’m a bit slow. Sorry boss.
This article says I need to install Whonix into Qubes, but did I not already do that in the template thingy?
What do you mean by default homepage?
You can run lsusb
command in dom0 terminal to show the USB devices available in the system.
The PCI USB controllers are attached to sys-usb and USB mouse connected to one of these USB controllers is also connected to sys-usb, but the mouse movements/actions can be passed from sys-usb to the virtual mouse device in dom0.
Also read this:
If you already have Whonix templates installed in your Qubes OS then you don’t need to manually install them.
Okay, so if I use “anon-Whonix” I’m basically using Whonix?
I guess you can say so.
Whenever I used Whonix on my windows using VMWARE, I had like a gateway thingy ma bob open, when the actual workstation. How come none of that is here in this?
sys-whonix = Whonix Gateway
anon-whonix = Whonix Workstation
Also what I mean by homepage is just like the wallpaper / main base thing. Basically the first screen when you log in. I thought Qubes was like a VM type thing where you open a Qube, then all the downloads from that qube open etc. like a VM
@qubesishard please create one topic per question. This way to makes it easier for other to find them and help you.
Ok sorry boss you should hire apparatus he’s the BEST!
@apparatus is really great. You’re right. If you are just starting to learn Qubes, you’ll find many people here are very knowledgeable and nice with sharing knowledge.
Unlike things like VirtualBox, gnome-boxes, or virt-manager, Qubes often does not show the screen in a box but let’s you run the Apps inside dom0 but using the distribution of the template in a virtual form. Even though the VM is simulating a computer, it just looks normal often. If you create a standalone VM and install an ISO, it will look similar to a virtualbox environment, but because Qubes uses XEN it’s different. You’ll learn more as you keep using it.
Thanks man! Love u
Hey! Random question - I tried to reboot my computer and I had to use this method to start and I’m gonna assume I’m gonna always need to use this method … does this affect security in any way? Thanks man :)))) <3
Did you try this?
Or you’ve installed the latest kernel and you still have the problem with booting without nomodeset
?
Hey so it’s funny you ask. Right after I asked that I installed the kernel, and it went well. and now I’m trying to turn it on, and my screen just turns black and my computer monitor says “No signal” my computer doesn’t turn off and my monitor light is just spam blinking. I’m gonna try to use the nomo thing again.
Ok I tried to boot with nomodeset. And at first it took me to a screen asking for my passphrase for my storage, but this time it didn’t have the usual Qubes logo. And when I did that it took me took a black screen and the last line of code says “Starting Plymouth-quit-wait.service - Hold until boot process finishes up…” and I’ve been here waiting for a few minutes.
Maybe there is some problem with latest kernel version and your hardware, maybe related:
You can boot the previous kernel version in the GRUB boot menu → Advanced options for Qubes.
You can try to install older kernel-latest version in the dom0 for a test:
sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest-6.10.3
Then boot Qubes OS with this kernel without nomodeset
from the GRUB boot menu → Advanced options for Qubes.
Sorry I haven’t slept in a while and I’m also pretty dumb. How do I boot from the previous kernel? I tried to use the command you typed out in grub menu on the advanced options with Qubes, and it said it can’t find the command ‘sudo’. Sorry I’m super tired and dumb.
Wait I got it boss man
In “Advanced options for Qubes” menu press enter on “Xen hypervisor …” and there will be a list of boot options with different kernel versions.
