Would like to reset audio settings back to default after failed sys-audio setup

Hello

After trying and failing to set up an audio qube using the guide here, I would like to reset my audio back to what it was before.

Previously, I could play YouTube videos in Firefox and hear the sound via an audio jack connected to my headphones. Currently, I can no longer hear audio though the video is clearly playing.

Not sure what to do. I’ve removed the audio policy file I created and also deleted the sys-audio VM I’d created for this purpose.

Do I need to also delete the audio-template and audio-app for sound to go back to what it was?

Thanks in advance for any help

I’ve tried resetting like so:

qvm-prefs personal audiovm personal

and then restarting the personal qube. The next thing I’m going to try is to restart my computer to see if that fixes it for the personal qube.

Try this:

qubes-prefs -D default_audiovm
qvm-prefs -D personal audiovm

Then reboot.

Hmph… that hasn’t worked :frowning:

When I plug in the audio jack and try to play a YouTube video, no sound comes through.

Check the Volume Control tabs in dom0, maybe you need to select the correct configuration or output device for the qubes.

I think that I am using the right Volume Control since screenshots get saved in the qubes_user Downloads folder of dom0. Not sure how I can attach them here to show what output devices I have.

As of now, toggling them on or off and/or selecting the different options they offer, doesn’t result in sound appearing for the playing video in Firefox. I assume that if I select the correct one, then I should hear sound immediately.

You can copy them from dom0 to some qube using qvm-copy-to-vm command in dom0 terminal and then attach the images to your post here.

There should be devices in the Output Devices tab but there is no devices there.
Maybe it’s because your audio device was attached to sys-audio first and it’s not working after it was returned to dom0 when you shut sys-audio down.
Did you reboot the system after removing the sys-audio?

Also I don’t know which audio device do you use, there are three audio controllers in the Configuration tab but two of them are Off. Maybe you need to turn them on there.

Yes I did

I will try turning all of them on and see if sound comes through the speakers.

Update: the solution was turning on the correct audio controller as pointed out here and also resetting the preferences as suggested here

Marking this as the solution since (for now) Discourse doesn’t support marking two posts as the solution
