Windows 10 VM Gui Agent - window closes intermittently

Hi Everyone! Happy Monday to ya

I am experiencing a problem with Windows 10 HVM losing its GUI window randomly. Its real impactful and I’m looking to resolve this or ditch the use of it if I cannot rely upon it to be working normally.

Further, I have looked at some other posts like this one: Windows hvm crashing

Performing qvm-start-daemon yields output such as Starting GUI and skipping the audio process since it exists. However no window ever pops open. Running this command via sudo gets a timeout for the GUI. I’m not sure if I am to elevate privilege here?

Let me know what you think, and thanks for your help everyone!

Klaus

UPDATE:

I’ve performed the following.

  • Removed NVIDIA 2070 card, power managment for display was impacted day one. It would only blank one monitor with this card installed. Performs as expected w/o it. This did not resolve the issue however.
  • Testing on a Windows HVM w/o the install of QWT software. Still fails.
  • Noticed that GUI window disappeared after Qubes power management blanks the screen. Set to disable both screen save and power management of the display. Still fails.
  • Thought to effect same changes in Win10 HVM. Set all power management to disable, as well as screen saver. Now testing…

I’ll update again, as soon as I know more. Any comments appreciated

Just to clarify, The old QWT from Qubes OS 4.1 era? Or the new QWT which is still under development?

20250128 was the binary I used in previous builds. This build for test has never had any version of QWT installed.

BTW, can you point me where the nightly binaries are hosted? I would like to play around with those  Thanks!

The PR to track is this:

The file is qubes-windows-tools-4.1.0.exe which could be found in PR files. This is highly experimental. Please do not use in production. It also requires Windows Testing Mode.

UPDATE:

So I’ve tested this without fail, and the step that has fixed it for me was to turn off all power management in the Windows 10 HVM. The other changes may not have been necessary, so go for this one first!

Enjoy
