Hi, i need to record, preferably stream one of my monitors output. What would be the sanest solution be? Should i order Streaming Hardware or will OBS be able to do this?
I would say the following is pretty sane (by Qubes standards).
I mention this in my other post:
The thing is would you have to find an HDMI splitter to also see the screen.
Use
- qubes-video-companion or an HDMI capture card (possibly with loop-out),
- OBS in an app VM and
- optionally and if you have a dedicated GPU and don’t need it for screen output, you can put it in the OBS’s VM and offload OBS’s compute-intense tasks to the GPU.
But not just to update this question; I have a related one:
On Qubes 4.3.1 I experienced low fps (around 15) captured with my HDMI capture card no matter whether it’s merely full HD or WQHD (both 60 Hz). OBS itself is rendering at more, at 30/30 fps (i. e., on target). My specs are
- Elgato 4K S card (can do WQHD up to 120 Hz)
- sys-usb 4 vCPU 1.5 GB RAM
- Connected via some fast USB-C cable
- Works fine on the same machine with bare-metal Fedora
Any advice on troubleshooting? I currently work around this issue by attaching the USB controller that the card is plugged into directly to the VM where the stream is needed, circumventing sys-usb.
