Hello fellow qubers
I have recently learned about Kagi. Their main product is a search engine without ads (google alternative), for which you directly pay in a subscription based model. The idea is not new: if you’re not paying for the product - you’re the product.
I have read many good opinions on how their search results are simply better than alternatives. I’ve read their privacy policy and articles arguing their model aligns the incentives of search provider with those of the user - it all looks good on the surface.
My threat model can be summarized: try to keep reasonably tight security practices in daily life, to stay safe from phishing, hacking, scamming and unruly surveillance (tracking and exploiting data), BUT not to level of paranoia - I’m not afraid of state level actors.
So, for example, I’m a happy ProtonMail user for many years, they’ve earned my trust and their products make my life much easier. That being said, before I trust any party with critical part of my digital life, such as my search habits and history, I’d like to carefully consider pros and cons.
So I’m curious to hear your thoughts on:
- Kagi search
- Kagi translate
- Orion web browser
Did anyone use them? If yes, how did you find the experience? If no, why?
Kind regards
