Thoughts on Kagi search and Orion browser

Hello fellow qubers

I have recently learned about Kagi. Their main product is a search engine without ads (google alternative), for which you directly pay in a subscription based model. The idea is not new: if you’re not paying for the product - you’re the product.

I have read many good opinions on how their search results are simply better than alternatives. I’ve read their privacy policy and articles arguing their model aligns the incentives of search provider with those of the user - it all looks good on the surface.

My threat model can be summarized: try to keep reasonably tight security practices in daily life, to stay safe from phishing, hacking, scamming and unruly surveillance (tracking and exploiting data), BUT not to level of paranoia - I’m not afraid of state level actors.

So, for example, I’m a happy ProtonMail user for many years, they’ve earned my trust and their products make my life much easier. That being said, before I trust any party with critical part of my digital life, such as my search habits and history, I’d like to carefully consider pros and cons.

So I’m curious to hear your thoughts on:

  • Kagi search
  • Kagi translate
  • Orion web browser

Did anyone use them? If yes, how did you find the experience? If no, why?

Kind regards

No, because I already publicly administrate self-hosted privacy front-ends and am currently working on my own user.js for Firefox ESR, among other projects, on Codeberg.

General Discussion Category should only be used for discussing things “related to Qubes”, whereas this topic has nothing to do with Qubes OS. So this is off-topic here.

For other topics, like this one, we have a closed Category, which is only available to users who made a sufficient contribution to the this forum.

Thank you FranklyFlawless, this is very interesting, I will explore these solutions over the weekend.

fsflover: Sorry for off-topic, I tried to find most fitting category, but I don’t have access to the one you linked. It sounds like I could find other interesting discussions there - what do I need to do to earn access?

As mentioned earlier, this forum is not for general discussions. Therefore, I had to close it.

You need to have Trust Level 2 or higher: All Around Qubes (Trust Level)
