Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Possible Driver Installation Needed on Qubes OS 4.2

Hello community,

I had an old topic on this matter but the title is a bit confusing and the thread is old with no activity on it so I decided to create a new one with new/more details and a proper title.

I use a System76 with AMD Ryzen 7 with Qubes 4.1.2. I use it with no issues but started to be slowly if I open multiple VMs.

Lately, I had to pump a little bit the resources so I ordered a Tuxedo system with 64GB RAM, Intel Core i9-13900HX and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB (I don’t care about this one because I don’t use its resources).

After installing the Qubes 4.2 on the new system, I have the following problem.
When I connect and external monitor, it doesn’t work. Both HDMI and DisplayPort ports are not working.

What can I do on this matter so I can make them working? Is this caused by the generic driver for Nvidia?
Is there a way to install the lasted Nvidia driver?

I hope someone can help me as I can’t work and, unfortunately, I can’t find another solution like Qubes OS where I can use multiple VMs without GUI and to open each app individually.

Another unrelated problem that I have with the new system is that when I connect the USB dongle for the Lenovo Mouse and Keyboard, only the mouse is recognized. The keyboard doesn’t work.

Thank you.

Have you checked if you need to use a fn+f-key or similar shortcut to activate the external display, maybe it’s just not set to automatically switch to external display.

Are you sure you are using the nouveau driver, check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any errors and to be sure you are using the correct driver.

This guide explains how to install the nvidia driver in dom0, the guide works I’m using the nvidia driver in dom0, installed using the manual method. You properly want to try this as a last resort, it’s not rocket science but breaking the display driver could leave you unable to use any display.

This ^ is the Xorg.0.log output.

There is a key on the keyboard for displays but that is opening the Display windows, it is not activating anything, unfortunately.

Most likely, I need to install the driver.
I checked the page here: Nvidia proprietary driver installation and followed the steps but I get stuck on the first 2:

No package xorg-x11-drv-nvidia available.

Are there any ways of installing an nvidia driver? There is another tutorial but after I follow that one and after restart, my display remains black.

I’ve managed to install the driver using this tutorial Nvidia proprietary driver installation, or this Nvidia driver installation with the mention that I don’t have “/etc/sysconfig/grub” but I have “/etc/default/grub” in which I put the rd…

After restart, I connected a cable to my mini DP port, and there is still no signal on the external monitor. I took the cable from the System76 laptop on which I have Qubes OS 4.1.2.

$ lsmod | grep nouveau
$

$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_wmi_ec_baclkight 16384 0
video 69632 2 nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight,i915
wmi 45056 3 video,nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight,mxm_wmi

I really don’t know what else to check.
Did anyone face the same problem in not working HDMI or miniDP?

I have installed both latest versions from nvidia website (“production branch” and “new feature branch”) for Nvidia RTX 4060 TI and my rear video ports are still not working (HDMI and miniDP).
I exchanged some emails with Tuxedo (laptop brand) support and I got the following details:

  • video ports are organized like this:
→ HDMI and miniDP from rear side are wired connected to dGPU and not working on Qubes OS by default or after driver installation.
→ USB-C from the right side is wired connected to iGPU and working on Qubes OS by default.
  • HDMI and miniDP work on Tuxedo OS live. It has the driver preloaded. So … there is no hardware issues with the ports or something else.

I need some help in making these ports working on Qubes OS. It’s a must as this is the only OS that suites my research work.

Are there any commands that I can execute to better understand the nvidia GPU status, if it is running correctly etc?

Thank you

can you try modprobe nvidia?

The nvidia module isn’t loaded.

@solene you are right

$modprobe nvidia
modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory /lib/modules/6.6.9-1.qubes.fc37.x86_64

I installed Qubes OS 4.2.1 as follows:

  • latest kernel 6.7.x.x from the booting options
→ when the booting starts I can see video on the external monitor. This means that the new video driver that is loaded supports also RTX 4060. I set the Date/Time, Storage options, root account, user account etc (external monitor works). On the next step, I need to finish the configuration. As soon as I get that page I can move the mouse a bit and then it hangs and automatically restarts in 1 second.
  • because the above situation happened, I decided to install it using the first option and get the latest kernel in dom0 by issuing the command “sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest”. The latest kernel by issuing the command seems to be 6.8.8.x
→ After restart I am trying to set the external monitor and as soon as I set it as extended and press Apply it hangs.

Is anyone having the same problem with the latest kernel on laptops with Nvidia dGPU?

Do you use nouveau drivers or proprietary Nvidia drivers?
Or maybe you’ve set nomodeset?

This is a brand new installation using the latest Qubes OS 4.2.1. I did nothing, it is the default video driver which seems to have support for my dGPU now but with some issues.

Hey here…
Is anyone willing to do some troubleshooting with me? I accept any advices here as I am out of ideas.

These are the steps that I followed:

  1. sudo qubes-dom0-update install gcc make kmodtool kernel-devel
  2. Downloaded/unarchived the driver: ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-5xx.xxx.xx.run --ui=none --no-x-check --keep --extract
  3. cd Nvidia_<tab>/kernel and issued
    `make IGNORE_XEN_PRESENCE=1 CC=“gcc -DNV_VMAP_4_PRESENT -DNV_SIGNAL_STRUCT_RLIM”
    mv nvidia.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/video/
  4. sudo depmod -a; modinfo nvidia
  5. Disable nouveau by adding rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau option in /etc/default/grub at the end of line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX (I put it in the first line because I have a second line starting with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX)
  6. Install the new grub config with grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/qubes/grub.cfg
  7. echo "blacklist nouveau" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  8. Reboot
(the steps are a mix of Nvidia proprietary driver installation and Nvidia driver installation - #2 by dhn)

For some reasons… the driver doesn’t seem to work. Anyways, I don’t understand how the management iGPU vs dGPU is working. do I have to disable iGPU and force dGPU by default in BIOS or what?
TLDR: I have 2 video ports that are wire connected to the dGPU and I can’t use them without a working Nvidia driver. I really need 2 external monitors for work purposes.

What else should I do or what I didn’t do correctly? How exactly can I check what and why is not working?
It is really frustrating because there are users here that successfully installed the dedicated Nvidia driver. in dom0.

You cannot use external monitors if you’re in Optimus mode. With NVIDIA cards, that is available only in Discrete mode.

I have read multiple topics related to sys-gui but there are some things I don’t understand.

  • what options should I choose when creating sys-gui because there are no details on this? (Type, Template, Networking… etc) I understand this is just to “enable” the Nvidia video card and normally other stuff wouldn’t be important but…
  • I upgraded the kernel to the latest even though I remember I had issues with this in the past, restarted, changed from BIOS to dGPU (discrete option) but is not working properly. For the SSD password didn’t appear the right layout, it was only CLI and after that it froze. I had to revert it to Optimal (this option makes both internal and discrete options available in the OS).
  • The sys-gui should enable the HDMI/DP ports after power on? After this I should be able to use the external monitors connected to HDMI/DP ports for any AppVM or only for sys-gui?

@tempmail

I wrote about this on other topics: when Qubes installed in Optimus mode, for me it doesn’t work to boot it in Discrete mode. As I remember, symptoms were just like yours. So if you want to use NVIDIA card for the whole Qubes, it looks to me you have to need new clean install.

If you attached NVIDIA card to sys-gui-gpu in Optimus mode, you can use it only there and only on external monitors and the rest of the Qubes will load to iGPU and only on laptop screen. If you attached it in Discrete mode, only sys-gui-gpu environment would be available to you and all the screens would/should be there. I have tested only former, because that way I virtually have 2 Qubes on one machine. Also wrote about that earlier.

It depends in which mode you want to use NVIDIA, and how you want to organize your Qubes (read previous). But basically, it can be tricky, and it depends on the scenario.
For example, my scenario in Optimus mode required me to pick the template and create a Standalone based on it. Then I renamed it to sys-gui-gpu, and then executed in dom0

[dom0@ user]$ sudo qubesctl top.enable qvm.sys-gui-gpu
[dom0@ user]$ sudo qubesctl top.enable qvm.sys-gui-gpu pillar=True
[dom0@ user]$ sudo qubesctl --all state.highstate

After creation, I added following services to a qube

guivm
lightdm
dummy-psu

From there, it is needed to install NVIDIA drivers in sys-gui-gpu, but that’s pretty overwhelming to explain for someone that’s not going to choose this scenario. If you are going to choose it, confirm that you successfully made it to here, and you need my help, so I could do my best to transfer my experience.

Hi @chrysstyann1 , any updates on the dGPU rtx 4060 setup?
