How to update Tor browser in whonix disposable?

Hello everybody

Still new to Qubes OS but do know how to use the Qubes updater but that does not update the Tor browser. Each time I run the “Tor browser downloader” it checks and then comes with an error warning and tells me to run a “systemcheck” that displays this:

[INFO] [systemcheck] Qubes UpdatesProxy Reachability Test: Trying to reach local Qubes UpdatesProxy... PROXY_SERVER: http://127.0.0.1:8082/
[INFO] [systemcheck] Qubes UpdatesProxy Reachability Result: Ok, torified update proxy reachable.
[INFO] [systemcheck] Qubes UpdatesProxy Connectivity Test: Skipped, because not using --leak-tests (--show-ip), ok.
[INFO] [systemcheck] Debian Package Update Check: Checking for software updates via apt-get... ( Documentation: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Update )
[INFO] [systemcheck] Debian Package Update Check Result: No updates found via apt-get.
[INFO] [systemcheck] Please donate!

How do I update the “Torbrowser” in the Whonix disposable? Thanks in advance

Are you running the update in the disposable or the template ?

It takes the Tor version from whatever the template has so if you update it there it will be updated in disposable. Run the Tor browser updater in the whonix ws template and then shut down the template. Then disposables will start with new version

If you want to only update in the disposable then I imagine you can run below in cli and then relaunch Tor browser from the cli

As I recall having read is that to keep both persistent whonix app qube (anon-whonix) and disposable whonix updated Torbrowser vise, is that I have to run the “Tor Browser Downloader” in both anon-whonix qube and in the “whonix workstation 17”. Both places starts to check for newer version but both fails with the before mentioned error message.

I used the commands in a terminal and that worked so thank you, the question is why the “Tor Browser Updater” fails?

I find the vagaries of the updater confusing. Recently I had an issue using the updater also (but a different error) and solved it with that cli command in whonix 17 ws (though it only worked with the onion flag). Since that update whonix ws has gone back to updating the browser with the Qubes Update (versus the updater).

It seems the updater does a few connectivity and signature checks and, if any fail, it won’t do the update. With past connection issues I have had some success forcing the updater over onion or switching on a proxy in the settings. Occasionally a server is down and this forces it to a different one

I only use whonix disposable so can’t speak to the anon-whonix question but yes I have heard that they need to be updated separately

You can update it using the updater built into Tor Browser without the disposable getting disposed of upon clicking the restart button. That may be an acceptable extra step each time you start a clean disposable.

Still ugly and confusing I would say. We need it to advise to update the template whenever needed.
