Would like advice on how to do data recovery in Qubes

As the title says, I would like to attempt data recovery from an external drive that has failed with this output

I found this ArchLinux guide which I intend to use (esp. the section on TestDisk and PhotoRec.

Is it possible to image the disk to a standalone VM (I think that’s what it is called in Qubes terms) to try and recover any files that are there or would I need to image the drive to another external hard drive.

You can use testdisk in qube with your disk attached to it.
