With Qubes do I need a separate router?

I’m excited to install Qubes on my Librem 14 laptop and hoping it is something my non-technical wife can use on her laptop as well.

I’m using a separate Linux machine as a router now and wondering if I can live without a separate router once I’m running Qubes. I would just set up the routing functions on the Qubes laptop and connect it directly to the modem and switch. I suspect Qubes will be more secure than just about anything I could run on separate hardware, and I’m not sure why connecting directly to the modem would be any worse than connecting directly to wifi while I’m traveling.
