Windows openning behind "Always on top" window

When there is a thing that drives me crazy (beside keyboard layout switch) in Qubes OS, it is persistent habit of Qubes to open new qube windows behind the one that is “Always on top”. So, usually I have to minimize that one in order to reach the “Same as others” one when the latter is the same size or less.

Any help on this, or it is a bug? I avoid hate, but this is the closest one to hate.

Probably an xfwm4 deficiency in how window placement interacts with always-on-top windows that’s not specific to Qubes OS. Maybe it can be reconfigured somehow? The Placement tab in Window Manager Tweaks looks promising.

Assuming that the problem is still present in newer xfwm4 versions (try a GUI domain based on Fedora 44?), here’s the upstream xfwm4 bug tracker:

Thanks for the ideas but they all just want to be top left. The only place I don’t want them.

Just for interest, if you put your Always-on-top window at bottom-right, do your new windows still appear under it?

( I always move my on-top windows to one side, so they do not get in the way, but maybe that is abnormal?)

How would you try to reproduce it? Shut down “AoT” qube, then start it again and “AoT” it to the right then to test, or to restart Qubes and all of it again, or just de-"AoT’ it, then to move it to the right, and so on and so on…?
Because I’ve seen it in this session without “AoT” qube started new windows from the already started qubes to stick to upper left, upon "AoT’ was shut down…
Crazy…
