Will I get locked out?

Hello!

when you reinstall a template (using GUI) that is for the under lying template of sys-usb can this cause a lock out? The docs mention no such advice on this topic but plenty of warnings for upgrading templates to different versions.

I want to reinstall the template but I am afraid I might lock myself out. Please help.

Also, does the same rules apply if I want to change the underlying template in the same version? For instance changing it to a minimal template instead of a full one etc?

If you’re using an unchanged non-minimal template and don’t use a USB keyboard, then you’re good. If you do use a USB keyboard, then you should exercise appropriate caution whenever doing anything related to sys-usb, especially if you use modified templates. Theoretically, you should be fine if the sys-usb template is a non-minimal template.

Edit: I don’t use USB keyboards, so I can’t comment on any details.

If you don’t use USB devices, then there’s no way it can lock you out. If you do, then anyone looking who knows the caveats knows what to tell you.

You can safely test the sys-usb with new template like this:

These commands wouldn’t work for reinstalling a template that is exactly the same using the GUI since it would get overwritten on install. Those instructions are meant for changing the template to a different one not reinstalling exactly the same one.

I don’t believe anything in the forums answers this question. The docs don’t even mention it so it might just be a non-issue but I want to be 100% certain.

Just clone the old template and set sys-usb to use cloned template before reinstalling it.

Okay so you are advising I switch it (more advanced use case) as a safety precaution so I can reinstall it in place. Gotcha.

The script linked above to test the template switching is safe to use and already tested.
