Why to Qubes backups take a bazillion years?

I’m on 4.1.2 (r4.1) with Debian 11 vm and I need to upgrade Qubes.

Regarding Qubes, I have a PDF reader/writer application. Should I create a VM then install the one off software into that?

Or do I install the software into the template?

Nevermind - I’ll either delete the stand alone. Or wipe the drive and do a fresh install.
How does the in-place upgrade handle standalone VMs? Will it ignore it? Will it upgrade it? The standalone is a hold over from when I started out with Qubes but now it is time to the Qubes.

My “workaround” will be to copy the data to a drive. Install the upgrade. Then copy the data back.

Thanks.

As of backup it depends.
6 months ago I’ve had 40gb backup, last month I’ve had 160gb backup… to the NAS.

You know you can open several topics?

I changed the title, could you remove outdated parts of your original post?

You can try to change the compression algorithm:

Or you can remove some qubes from the backup? I have some qubes containing mostly data. I back up the data with another tool and don’t bother backing up those qubes.

Provide more details if you really want to solve this.

I bookmarked a long thread on backups that I will read later. For now I am comfortable with copying the data and software configuration files to storage.

Try turning off compression. Much faster.
