Which File Manager is best?

Hi everyone, im newish and a UI user on; Qubes 4.3 & i like to use a lot of file management stuff, filing away files, editing them, working on them a lot & wondered what the best opensource file manager is that i need to do the stable job very well with lots of features etc as i currently using “Files” which came on Fedora 43 template & its rubbish, glitchy and has no features, worse one ever… :cold_sweat:

I want it as a repo as need to use it on a offline VM Qube (USB-Vault) type.
I do have repo FlatPac installed if that helps.

I recommend terminal-based file managers, like yazi, lf or ranger. As for GUI file managers, I use Thunar in rare cases.

how do i get Thunar?

In Debian template terminal: sudo apt install qubes-core-agent-thunar
In Fedora template terminal: sudo dnf install qubes-core-agent-thunar

Thanks, i did so but it looks very limited, can i get better than Thunar pls?

Hi @betty. Generally we try to keep things more focused on Qubes. But sometimes it’s hard to set the boundary. In this case I think it’s OK to keep the post to help people understand the various file manager options but you may have more luck searching for file managers for fedora or debian and install those.

where im confused is that in QubesOS 4.2 in the native Files there was colour, highlighting files and folders options and so-forth yet in 4.3 i just cant understand how to get back these features in any given file manager of Qubes, maybe im doing something wrong?

My personal favourite is the nemo file manager. If you want to add Qubes-specific integrations to it, you can use: GitHub - Atrate/qubes-nemo-context-actions: Context actions for the Nemo file manager for Qubes OS · GitHub

Where did you see this “native Files” in 4.2? That would help people to
help you.
Are you looking for options to provide color, or to color files and
folders differently? What?

Generally, the best File manager is the one that works best for you -
some people prefer to manage files etc at the command line, or with a
tui, some fully featured GUI. Be specific about what you want, and
where you want it
, and you will get help.

I never presume to speak for the Qubes team.

yes, i would love a full featured GUI File Manager, so as many features as possible, i love to color folders & files too as well as be able to use the tree and layout good, Thunar does it all but unfortunately Thunar doesnt work for me with being able to move any files to another Qube and i really dont understand why this feature just wont work as if it did then i would just use that, i need to use File or File Manager for that and those dont have any features at all available on there…

This sounds strange. As far as I can remember there are all file options even in context menu…

You raised this in another thread, and that died on the vine.
The position seems to be that you have the qubes thunar package
installed in the template, qvm-copy/move tools work as expected at the
command line, but your thunar does not show the Qubes section of the
Right_Click_Menu
I stress your because I am not aware of this issue affecting any
other user.

To try to resolve it:

  1. What is the template you are using?
  2. Have you made any modifications to the template?
  3. Have you tried using any other vanilla template with thunar installed?

is midnight commander still a thing?

Personally I like nautilus.

  1. Im using Deb-13 Template.
  2. Not sure what you mean by modifications to the template, i have added other repo’s to it thats all if thats what you mean as im non techy.
  3. Yes i just tried Fedora-43 and that seemed to work out the box but i struggle to work with Fedora for my USB-Vault stuff offline as this specific QubeVM is for only offline SSD files and folders stuff where i plug in a SSD and then work directly off of that in LibreOffice and lots other stuff for normal office work stuff you see where as Deb always seems better for most of the stuff i seem to do?

I have just switched to Fedora-43 to try and make it work for me as the feature is so so important to me, however i have just discovered that when i right click a file then click PROPERTIES then EMBLEMS that this seems to be missing yet i had it with deb-13 would you so happen to know how to get it back please? thanks

Apologies for late reply.

What are these other repos? What additional packages have you installed ?
