What would you like to see improved in Qubes OS?

Ah yes the old dilemma.

Q) the documentation is inadequate.

A) you can contribute to fixing it yourself.

Q) Yeah, but because the documentation is inadequate I have no clue what to write.

Built in blue light filter, like redshift/night light.
I wonder what that would take.

Maybe we can add some ideas to the list?

  • report outdated documentation
  • report unclear documentation
  • try to follow any instructions, and see if they are accurate and up-to-date

Install redshift, it’s already available

If possible, an updated version of QWT would be great. Also a feature that allows sorting Qubes into folders or groups would be very nice. It would be highly beneficial, particularly when managing a large number of Qubes, as excessive scrolling becomes cumbersome.

Install redshift-gtk, then create a file redshift.conf in .config and add this:
[redshift]
temp-day=6900
temp-night=3800
gamma=0.8
adjustment-method=randr
location-provider=manual

[manual]
lat=40.71
lon=44.82

There are 2 community guides about this :+1:

“redshift” requires geoclue2 which has no business to exist in my dom0!
(and geoclue2 depends on “ModemManager-glib” :man_facepalming: )

You can use sct, it’s much smaller and does the job for a fixed red-ification (while redshift can shift over time of the day), GitHub - faf0/sct: sct - set color temperature of screen

I think it will in 4.3 :

There is a new preliminary version of QWT at https://yum.qubes-os.org/r4.3/current-testing/dom0/fc41/rpm/qubes-windows-tools-4.2.1-1.fc41.noarch.rpm, which works quite well for Windows 10. For Windows 11, the Qubes graphics driver still has its problems, but the rest works. It can be installed in Qubes R4.3 and also in R4.2.4.

Currently, I am updating the documentation on QWT installation.

Also, remember that if you’re using an external monitor, you can simply adjust the color settings on your monitor. Then you don’t have to install anything in dom0.

Yes but not all monitors offer a great control about color temperature, and does not allow to change temperature based on the current time. But this can work indeed.

Please fix white squares for the icons in the tray on panel for the dark theme. Fixing this is difficult even for experienced users. This will make Qubes more visually appealing. Many users use the dark theme.

A useful in-between solution is given as a short script using xrandr, here:

https://forum.qubes-os.org/t/blue-light-filter/

It avoids the installation of redshift.

These are excellent suggestions, both for official documentation and for
user guides.

Agreeable, KDE is great. My only issue with tray icons and icons of applications being a qube

I much prefer the KDE menu - it’s customisable in ways that the Qubes
menu is not, and is far better at producing process focussed menus without
an emphasis on the mechanics. Each to their own.
I keep the Qubes menu hanging about for testing etc. I haven’t had it
disappear, but it should be straightforward to get it back if it is
lost. Xfce users also have that menu disappear sometimes.
