What does it mean for "Slow Keys" to be enabled?

Periodically after switching to Qubes 4.3, I get a Qubes notification saying “Slow Keys have been enabled in [Qube name]”, for instance in sys-net. This is without any manual interaction on my part.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and what does it mean? Since slow keys is apparently related to the keyboard, I don’t see why it should be getting enabled in sys-net. I searched around and I haven’t seen anyone else mention this issue. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I am using a USB keyboard. The strange thing about it is that it does not occur within dom0, but occurs within individual appVMs. It usually occurs soon after unlocking my PC after it has been idle.

Perhaps holding shift (like frank said) while entering password to unlock is the cause. You could try using caps lock instead, as a test

It is not a normal behavior.

I suggest that you create a QubesOS issue.

I raised this last year at the summit, but never followed up with an issue. For me it always occurs in VMs with snap installed.

I received this notification once, yesterday, after a fedora-43-xfce template update and restart of sys-usb. This was on a laptop with no external keyboard. I tried to recreate with another restart just now, but without another notification. Edit: sys-usb notification appeared again after putting the laptop in standby mode.

I have the same issue for weeks, NOT holding down the shift key, but when switching from one qube to another. Happens “randomly” several times a day.

I definitly see that often without pressing on any keys for longer that typing speed as well.
