VPN in separate qube with SoftEther VPN Client

I’m trying to setup VPN to be able to connect to my workplace. Currently I’m still working under Windows, as there the setup is already completed and (for a network newb like me) easier to setup.

I downloaded and extracted the file package from SoftEther into the Fedora template. I then created a clone of sys-firewall, started a terminal and setup the vpn connection. When checking, the client tells me it’s connected, but I cannot ping any computer in the remote network, neither by name, nor by IP (destination network unreachable), so I’m left wondering if this is an issue with the setup - which seems unlikely if the client says it’s connected - or some special property of qubes-networking.

I also had tried to use openvpn, but this did not work, probably because (according to our admin) there are multiple VPN Adapters on the Host.

I’d never heard of Softether. Yes, Qubes networking has special
properties that must be taken into account for VPNs and proxies.

I also had tried to use openvpn, but this did not work, probably because
(according to our admin) there are multiple VPN Adapters on the Host.

I don’t know what this means. Are they referring to multiple VPN
protocols? Or multiple server addresses?

You should find out which VPN protocol is recommended for your provider.
If its openvpn or wireguard, you can use Qubes-vpn-support to configure
set it up in just a few steps:

I’ve been provided with an .ovpn file with the configuration but that did not work, the connection could not be established. With the SoftEther client, at least the client seems to be satisfied with the connection.

The term used by the Windows client GUI is “Virtual Hub Name”, so this could be something specific to SoftEther. There are multiple available for selection when using the GUI and one has to be configured. According to our admin, openvpn should have worked but I cannot confirm if anybody else uses Linux or even an OS other than Windows.
