VMs not created after fresh install

After I ran into the same issue yesterday and needed many installation till I managed to get everything up and running again here my findings as a checklist:

  1. I needed to use another USB stick. I tried to erase it and wrote a fresh 4.2.3 with dd under Qubes OS but it still failed installation and sometimes (!?) the media check.
  2. I needed to choose the EFI Boot (not USB) with F10 during bootup (Intel NUC) rather than changing the boot order in BIOS.
  3. At the end I choosed the manual re-partitioning and formatting rather than the automatic one (no clue if this was part of the solution).
