Using dedicated nvidea gpu in a VM

Hi all. I did spend a few hours poking around the forum but didn’t find anything definitive. In fact i’m more confused than ever.
Apologies in advance as i’m sure this gets asked all the time. I appreciate its a highly complex OS supported by only a few and not enough hours i the day etc.

I’m strongly considering moving to qubes from windows. Recent backups taken etc… that close yes.
Putting aside all the totally reasonable / logical comments around “go dip your toe in a regular distro for 6 months and then come back here” for one minute.
Lets just agree i must be crazy and ready for the pain of jumping direct in the deep end and all the torment that will come with it.

There’s one deal breaker. ( and from what i’ve read in the last few days it’s one that ALOT of people have a similar one ).

  1. Can i pass thru my nvidia 3080 ti to a VM ? ( its only for gaming and some vid gen work , so i have no security concerns about the VM itself being at risk. I’m also prepared to look at the pro’s con’s of it also leaving the rest of the system “less” that optimally secure. )
  2. Can i view the VM on my laptop screen or do i need a separate monitor ? ( this had not even occurred to me until i read a post somewhere yesterday )

I’ve read literally 100’s of posts ( not just here ), stating it works, it doesn’t work, it works sometime. Usual types of comment of things of this nature. What’s throwing me is some of these are from 3-5+ years ago. Lots of nearly there and the system will soon allow this posts… As if everyone was hopeful many years ago. But im still non the wiser. If someone with some real experience wouldn’t mind giving a more structured answer ( with all the tech caveats of course ) , I and i’m sure a lot of other people would be really grateful. The information i’ve dug up is very grey at best.
Not having a pop at qubes in any way. I’m sure if nvidia played nice with drivers etc this might all be a mute point.

So my situation is this. I realise switching to qubes is a huge mountain to climb . But considering this learning curve and the time it will take etc, I dont want to make the jump unless i can take advantage of my dedicated gpu. ( i understand with VM that even if possible i’m likely to take a bit of a hit on frame rate etc ).

Any help appreciated …

Use a computer without discrete graphics for Qubes, and a separate computer with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti for gaming. VM windows in Qubes OS can be resized and tiled across extendable workspaces.

Are you ready to make a decision or not?

Why assert this particular advice? QubesOS seems to support gaming with dGPU hardware in HVM qubes.
