Thinkpad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11 Issues

Hi. I am trying to install Qubes on Thinkpad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11, type number 21v9-001nmx, with panther lake CPU/GPU, hoping for better web browser performance (any tips here welcome as well).

I get to anaconda part of the install and there it stops with last line in X.log being:

"(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 not DRI2 capable"

The only errors in the log are:

(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist)
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist)

I have currently tried the stable iso 4.3.1, the 4.3.2-rc1, and now finally the signed weekly build 4.3.2-202609082200
I tried them all with (and without..) the latest kernel option which for the weekly build is 7.1.12-1
All ISO are made with dd, media tested, and confirmed working with older laptops

Laptop can install and function as intended with Xubuntu 24.04.05 LTS, kernel 7.0.0-34

I have tried using chagpt for troubleshooting and spend a fair amount of time typing things back and forth between the laptop and the chat prompt, mainly trying different kernel parameters added in GRUB. I have some linux experience, but to be honest, the boot process is a bit beyond me at the moment and I do not full understand all steps tried here.

Any help appreciated at this point, or info about if this hardware will soon be supported.

Hi Picasso

I just noticed this post:

– and it mention Intel Panther Lake / Xe graphics, so maybe parts of it also works on your machine?

FTR: I don’t have any hardware like yours, so this is just a guess, based on words that looks similar ..

Yea, you got some newer hardware. Im sitting on some gen 3 intel as well that doesnt really work yet. The eaaiest choice is to just wait it out until support comes around. That is, unless you are the type of guy who loves to do workarounds all the time.

For me, im sitting it out. Chances are, if you are on panther lake hardware, some other components arent working ideally either yet.

If i were you, just download fedora and run it until qubes catches up. Keep an eye on the forum for news.

Chris A, you are my hero. Your suggested line gets me to the graphical installation when booting on the signed weekly build! I thought i had looked at EVERYTHING related in the forum, but you are better at searching than me it seems. Thanks a lot!

As a side note, I have spent about two days with chatgpt, feeding it logs and running suggested commands, and after a while it just starts repeating previous request for logs i already provided and commands i already ran. Very frustrating, because of the “we are really close to solving this!” tone

Yes, I got a bit ambitious when buying new hardware, I will definitely go with older stuff next time.

Hi Picasso

I’m happy, that you could use the link.

Credit should go to @3isenheim for doing all the hard work and writing the documentation .. I simply follow the forum and reads/scan a lot of topics ..

So you got it to work on intel panther lake 3 series? What exactly did you do? I might try this as well. I would really apreciate your step by step, if you have the time!

i ran the first step in the guide:
"Boot the graphical installer with Mesa forced to llvmpipe:

inst.graphical plymouth.enable=0 systemd.setenv=LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true systemd.setenv=GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe systemd.setenv=MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=llvmpipe

Put this on the installer Linux/kernel line, the module2 ... vmlinuz ... line."

That got me to the graphical installer and allowed me to get qubes onto the laptop harddrive. I rebooted and then ran the qubes first boot configurator, which also ran fine. Reboot again and then I got stuck during qubes booting/loading on a new problem which I havent had time to look at yet.

Hi Picasso

Problems at the second boot from the harddrive, could be related to autostart of Qubes (eg. sys-net). Look at the post from @3isenHeiM about adding qubes.skip_autostart from GRUB.

[Edit: If the post about “Dell XPS 14 (DA14260)” help you - go and add a  to it]
