System keeps rebooting after trying to add any hardware

I’ve tried multiple configurations and very serious problems keep popping up no matter what I do.

Under certain configurations, when I start this qube, other qubes including sys-usb and whonix gw shut down.

This is a Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (20JNS0ED0P)
i5-6300U Skylake Integrated Graphics (HD 520). According to a qubes HCL entry submitted by “anonymous” (go figure), nearly everything should work on this.

I didn’t get it when I read through your post.

According to your topic, I assume you added a new piece of hardware to your system. That means the pcie address of some otherwise untouched devices may have changed. So it’s possible that your sys-net or sys-usb took over some critical devices instead of the network adapter/ USB controller.

I’d recommend adding qubes.skip_autostart to the kernel command line at grub when rebooting, so you’ll only have dom0 running. Then check the device lists of sys-net and sys-usb.

Oh wow. Are you deliberately trying to use sys-gui-gpu? If not, then it’s likely that you’ll unconsciously crash the system.

Sys-gui-gpu? I had to look that up. Is that under sys-usb? Which qube handles sys-gui-gpu?

I’m trying to do this for my personal qube. Is this a massive security risk that isn’t worth it?

I’m just tired really of dealing with herky-jerky videos on a 16 core, 16 GB ram PC.

Good point in regards to the flash drives, but it seems a lot safer to log in to my google account and watch youtube in my personal qube, for example, than in sys-usb.

I think you don’t understand how to use Qubes OS.
You don’t start browser in sys-usb qube to use the USB devices. You can attach the USB devices from sys-usb qube to some other qube e.g. to your personal qube.

I understand you don’t start your browser in sys-usb to use your usb devices. I assumed from your question “What’s wrong with using sys-usb?” that you were telling me to only access usb devices from sys-usb.

For anyone finding this thread through a Google search or local qubes-os.org search, this is the documentation that solved the problem for me. Basically, there’s an icon in the panel that you can click on to attach system hardware or USB devices to any qube you want.
