So I use a few different copies of Debian on the system image side. It’s kinda sus to me that just two of them need an update today. I am not sure if this something worth diving deeper on or not.
I guess the question comes down to the programs on the system image. So if I have programs on one system image and not the other. An those programs need an update. Could that be the cause of this?
Hello there I see nobody responded to your question yet. I have a bit of difficulty understanding your post correct. Do you mean you cloned / copied your Debian templates and not all the templates are updating? Only 2 out of 3? According to my knowledge it depends if there is an update for the template or the apps you installed on them. If you have different apps installed on the templates this could be the cause yes. However, if you think your template may be compromised, just delete it and build a new one. You can also keep an encrypted backup of it if you want to keep it for documentation - or something like that. Here is some more info about updating : How to update — Qubes OS Documentation
is this an AI response? yes the issue i was reporting is that one template needed updates and another didn’t I was asking for cause? As this seemed odd to me.
Nope, real human here in the flesh! I see some people who post in this topic get fewer or no responses, and I felt a bit bad about that. I can imagine what it’s like feeling anxious when you’re unsure using new hardware/software and maybe had a bad experience in the past. So I just wanted to help out. But I’m by no means an expert.
Well whats your take on the issue then. Why would one template need an update and basically a cloned template not update? Do you know the answer to the question I did ask. About if the software in each template effects updates. As, such maybe that is the answer the software in each was varied. A confirmation of that would at least explain it and give me something to check in the future.
I know you answered yes so I guess that is that. How-ever you seemed a little unsure. So, I am re asking out of curiosity.
These boxes are just hobby for me as much as I am interested. I am not terribly worried about it. I don’t have any reason to believe it is compromised at this time, based on what you have said. I start from the basis of not trusting them at all an work my way to trusting them enough to do the basics. Seems the healthy way to deal with it.
What about you are you a cyber professional or are you also a hobbyist.
Yes, this is correct. You get packet updates for the templates themselves and packet updates for the software running on the template.
Perhaps it’s better then to post in the user support forum next time
I’m neither a hobbyist or a professional - I am forced to learn linux and cybersecurity due to circumstances. But I aim to be at a professional level one day, even if it probably will never be my job.
