Strang dual monitor issue

Good evening guy’s

Hope all is well in these “trying & troubling” times.

Just a strange thing has happened over the last 2 days with my qube…

I have a dual moniotr setup and have them set to “extend”, working great till late yesterday
For whatever reason one of the monitors will just “shut down” and everything compresses to the other monitor" use stuff". I close everything I have open on all my work spaces, and go to shut down, so I can restart my qube and continue on with what I was doing. Well upon shutting down, all of the sudden the other monitor comes back to life, so now I have both up and working.

Ok,

Back up after power cycling, both monitors working and then for a strange reason, instead of one of the monitors shutting down, they are…mirrored, WEIRD.

I go to System settings>Display> uncheck “mirror” and keep setting.

Things are ok for now, but I though I tell you guy’s…

May not be exactly helpful but, I found that with HDMI plus multi-monitor I sometimes had difficulties (long time ago) that I ultimately solved with a unique solution - see below.

I have since changed the setup a bit although I kept my solution intact (just in case) but at the time I had two mismatched monitors hooked up multi-monitor & the one was brand new & connected via HDMI (I think that the other was connected using either VGA or perhaps DVI) - some time later began exhibiting about the same oddities you mention that can be counted upon to produce much more complicated overall experiences because the loss of a monitor causes X11 to shift gears & you can get lost in what is precisely wrong initially with all of the multitudes of consequences.

While it was setup this way though, I couldn’t see that brand new monitor (mismatched or no) being the cause so I decided to experiment & obtained an adapter that I knew would change the nature of the signal going to this monitor (which could accomodate direct connections to two kinds of input without aid - D-sub/VGA & HDMI) - you could say that my mind lept to a conclusion about some item but I’m not precisely certain why the combination occurred to me right then, I only know the results now. When I attached an adapter that could translate HDMI to VGA so that the computer side was still putting out HDMI to the monitor but the monitor was receiving the VGA equivalent, the problems ceased - never to return.

The same monitor was never a problem later on in a single monitor HDMI connection to another Qubes system for years either. Only seemed to occur when I combined HDMI & multi-monitor.

@kysstfafm Thank you for your help. Both of these monitors are about 6 months old, both use Display port from source (computer), and then HDMI mini (monitor) side and new cables.

Again last night, both monitors went “Black” and then came backup “mirrored”
Went into System settings>Display> uncheck “mirror” and keep setting “extend” for monitors.

Just strange why it is doing this. First time the one monitor went down and never came back until I went to “power cycle”/ shut down. Once I selected “shut down”, both monitors were up and working together. Start back up and worked fine. So this is a random thing, but now instead of one monitor shutting down, like no signal, they go “black” and come back up mirrored…
