We don’t know anything about your .vmdk. So, blind guess would be: did you boot it with its own kernel?
Yes, I did boot the machine with the option Kernel Provided by qube.
I remember having such problems with infamous gpu_... qubes where I had to test amount of RAM provided to the qube, when adding it too much and messing with xen.xml, but those were not .vmdk files as far as I can remember.
I don’t want to discourage you. Probably decade ago I came from the VirtualBox world with dozens of boxes set up. When I discovered Qubes, I think I tried to convert them all, only to realize they are supposed to be compromised by default, so extracted all of the data (including settings) from them and passed them to newly created qubes from the scratch.
