I can imagine that if Qubes made KDE the default, and not XFCE, it would see more new user adoption.

Unfortunately it would make a significantly larger iso. Currently, it fits to a (double-layer) DVD disk. AFAIK installing from a disk is generally more secure than from a (rewritable) USB stick.
