Request to update Qubes OS 4.3 kernel to ≥ 6.14 for RTL8812AU Wi‑Fi support

Hello,

I would like to request consideration for updating the default kernel in Qubes OS 4.3 to version 6.14 or newer. The reason is to enable support for the Realtek RTL8812AU USB Wi‑Fi adapter, which requires kernel ≥ 6.13/6.14 to work natively with the rtw88_8812au driver.

Currently, the default kernel in Qubes 4.3 is 6.12.64, which prevents stable installation and use of this card without manual DKMS patches. Unfortunately, DKMS builds do not work reliably on this kernel.

It would be very helpful if a newer kernel could allow plug-and-play support for RTL8812AU and similar USB Wi‑Fi adapters.

Are there any plans to update the kernel in Qubes 4.3 soon? Are there recommended workarounds for users who need this Wi‑Fi card in the meantime?

Thank you for any information and guidance.

While there is a default kernel package, Qubes also offers the kernel-latest package, which is currently on 6.18.4.

You can install it from dom0:

sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest kernel-latest-qubes-vm

I’ve performed the update, but my kernel version is still 6.12.64. I assume you might be using a non-stable version or something similar?

.

I’m not sure I understand your reply.

I’ve completed the update, but my kernel version is still 6.12.64. Is it possible that you’re using a non-stable or testing version?

If you installed the packages, you need to restart your qubes so that they can boot on the correct kernel. The same applies to dom0 if you want it there. If they don’t, make sure the kernel is selected in the Linux Kernel section of Qubes Global Config

At the moment, the required kernel version is not available in Qubes OS. It is possible that it may be available in the testing branch, but using the testing repository is not consistent with my security practices.
