Recommended NVIDIA Optimus Setting for sys-gui-gpu preparation

Hey guys,

I want to use a sys-gui-gpu qube to get gpu away from dom0…

In my Laptop BIOS I can enable or disable NVIDIA Optimus, when disabled the intel GPU is turned off and only GPU is the NVIDIA Quadro, HDMI and Display is then attached to the NVIDIA GPU.

Would this be the preferred way (without Optimus, only NVIDIA GPU)?

Just tried this setting and noticed the prompt to enter disk password is now without eye candy and after entering I only get the three points (busy indicator) but no login window… I then can turn off the laptop with power button (it seems to shut down correctly)… Windows boots fine with this setting and only shows NVIDIA GPU in device manager…

Thanks for help!

What’s your NVIDIA model and kernel version in dom0?
Maybe your kernel version doesn’t have the nouveau driver for your NVIDIA model.

It’s NVIDIA Quadro P1000 & 6.10.10-1.qubes.fc37.x86_64.

I guess it should work:

Maybe try to use older kernel version in case there is some problem with the latest one.

You cannot disable Optimus mode and expect confidently Qubes to boot in Discrete mode if you installed it in Optimus mode.

You’ll have to try a clean Qubes install in Discrete mode, as it was in my case, with the kernel-latest.

This is not exactly the case, as I installed on another laptop only with igpu (intel) then cloned to a new ssd which now sits in the new laptop. Is there a way to switch to discrete mode without reinstalling?

Or maybe just setup the sys-gui-gpu just the way it is now? What would be better?

I am using sys-gui-gpu differently, to practically have 2 Qubes’ on one computer. But this could be offtopic.
