I’m running Qubes OS on an Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU and an RTX 5070 GPU (2025 model), installed on a external USB drive.
I’m experiencing two separate issues:
1. Random complete freeze during normal use
After a few hours of just working normally, the entire system suddenly hard-freezes no lag beforehand, no warning, it just locks up instantly. The screen freezes, the keyboard becomes completely unresponsive, and the only way out is a forced power-off. Nothing in my usage triggers it consistently it just happens randomly.
2. Sleep/wake causes a reboot
When the laptop goes into sleep mode and I open it back up, it seems to resume for about a minute and then spontaneously reboots itself.
I never had either of these issues on my older laptop or desktop PC running Qubes.
What I’ve already tried:
- Installed the newest available kernel via
sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest kernel-latest-qubes-vm and set it as the global default no change to the freezing behavior
- I can’t use the new kernel on sys-net specifically, because on any kernel newer than the oldest one, the WiFi connections don’t show up in Network Manager at all. So sys-net stays pinned to the old kernel while all other VMs use the new one.
Has anyone with the same or similar hardware (especially Intel Ultra / Meteor Lake + Nvidia RTX) found a working fix? Any help appreciated.
Like someone actualy please help me fix this, like has anyone ever had the same issue?
When your system freezes can you ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a virtual terminal?
After a forced or unexpected reboot is there anything interesting near the end of the dom0 journal for the prior boot? See: dom0$ sudo journalctl -b -1
I will check when it happens again
It says command not found when i type
dom0$ sudo journalctl -b -1
Don’t type in the dom0$ part

This was right before the freeze, I have shared this with a ai chatbot and it said i should hide my Nvidia Rtx gpu from dom0
Do you guys think this will work?
Hi, it looks like the part you pasted is all from boot up, and I think you’re more interested in what happens near the end of the journal, before/during the freeze. That said:
Jun 07 15:09:58 dom0 kernel: exFAT-fs (sda4): Volume was not properly unmounted. Some data may be corrupt. Please run fsck.
(Probably not related to the freeze, though)
Probabilistically speaking it’s not a terrible guess that the GPU would have something to do with a hard-freeze problem, on any platform.
Thanks — you’re right that most of what I pasted is session startup. The freeze evidence I think is actually this line at 15:09:59, right before an 11-second log gap:
kernel: kauditd_printk_skb: 100 callbacks suppressed
Then after 11 seconds of nothing, kwin XCB BadDamage + BadWindow errors appear at 15:10:10. My guess (and someone else suggested this too) is that the RTX 5070 being exposed to dom0 without a real driver is causing nouveau to thrash and flood the audit subsystem. Planning to try rd.qubes.hide_pci + nouveau.modeset=0 to hide it from dom0 entirely. Hardware is ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 2025, Intel Core Ultra 9, RTX 5070, Qubes 4.3 latest kernel.
This is what my ai told me to say
And the unmount was a extra partition on my external usb so that i could extract the logs from dom0 to my other pc so i can copy paste it here so i dont think that has anything to do with the freezes
Also ive talked to another person with the exact same laptop with all the same specs and also bought from the same store and he also has all the exact same issues on Qubes os
So just to clarify, the freeze in this example happened very soon after boot up?
This time it did but most of the times it just happens randomly like very random like when im not even touching the screen sometimes when the screen is off like fully black, it is extremely random
It happens like 1-3 times a day
I just did the gpu hiding thing and my entire system does seem to be way faster at booting etc i havent had any freezes or anything yet but theres 1 issue now
My laptop is getting very hot at idle
These are the commands i used for hiding the gpu
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
rd.qubes.hide_pci=01:00.0,01:00.1 nouveau.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau
Then after i tried this for disabling my gpu
echo auto | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/99-nvidia-powersave.rules
ACTION==“add”, SUBSYSTEM==“pci”, ATTR{vendor}==“0x10de”, ATTR{power/control}=“auto”
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules && sudo udevadm trigger
And when i typed
cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_status
It did still say active and my laptop was still very hot
Might be worthwhile to take a look at the ends of the journals for a couple of the other instances of freezing and see if they reveal something more. I feel the GPU as culprit is still a guess at this point, whatever the chatbot said (but again, not a terrible guess).
Is this an old issue or is it new after the system tweaks? And not related to the system simply being up longer now?
Yeah after i did the gpu hiding
So after i removed my gpu my system became a lot faster but the random freezes still happen
I still think your best bet is to look at the ends of journalctl -b -1 (-1 meaning previous boot, -2 meaning the boot before that, …) after a freeze and see if there are any suggestive log lines.
