Qubes OS randomly hard-freezes on Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 (Intel Ultra 9 + RTX) kernel update didn't fix it

I’m running Qubes OS on an Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU and an RTX 5070 GPU (2025 model), installed on a external USB drive.

I’m experiencing two separate issues:

1. Random complete freeze during normal use
After a few hours of just working normally, the entire system suddenly hard-freezes no lag beforehand, no warning, it just locks up instantly. The screen freezes, the keyboard becomes completely unresponsive, and the only way out is a forced power-off. Nothing in my usage triggers it consistently it just happens randomly.

2. Sleep/wake causes a reboot
When the laptop goes into sleep mode and I open it back up, it seems to resume for about a minute and then spontaneously reboots itself.

I never had either of these issues on my older laptop or desktop PC running Qubes.

What I’ve already tried:

  • Installed the newest available kernel via sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest kernel-latest-qubes-vm and set it as the global default no change to the freezing behavior
  • I can’t use the new kernel on sys-net specifically, because on any kernel newer than the oldest one, the WiFi connections don’t show up in Network Manager at all. So sys-net stays pinned to the old kernel while all other VMs use the new one.

Has anyone with the same or similar hardware (especially Intel Ultra / Meteor Lake + Nvidia RTX) found a working fix? Any help appreciated.

Like someone actualy please help me fix this, like has anyone ever had the same issue?

When your system freezes can you ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a virtual terminal?

After a forced or unexpected reboot is there anything interesting near the end of the dom0 journal for the prior boot? See: dom0$ sudo journalctl -b -1
