Qubes installation?

Try this specific kernel version 6.6.42 or older. I think the Qubes OS 4.2.3 installer is using kernel 6.6.48 and it has this issue with NVIDIA GPUs.

I have tried qubes 1,2,3.0,3.2,4,4.1,4.2,+ latest

I used the same USB stick that I did when I installed the latest time a few months ago when I upgraded to 4.1 from 4

I’ll get a full version list including RC versions shortly…

I even have a USB drive that I have qubes on that used to work in the machine but now does not. I found it when looking for another USB to put a different version of the iso on. That was qubes 3.0 and works on the laptop, but not the desktop now.

In that case it’s either some hardware issue or something changed in your BIOS config.

Problem is everything was fine… Was only when I went to reinstall after I botched some code that it wouldn’t reinstall.
Not would any version run.
All in the space of 10 seconds…

Hereis ome interesting I formation for you…

AMD GPU works fine.
NVIDIA Quadro works fine.
NVIDIA Gtx1050 partially operates, it gets through to creating a black screen, but it activates.
NVIDIA GTX 1060 gets stuck at the dracut USB warning for dom0.

That’s on the latest kernel and version of the system.

Going to try installer on the 1050 see if that works.

Will update soon.

Managed to get 4.2.0 RC4 installed using another GPU. Then put my main GPU back in the main slot and it works fine.

So the installer won’t work with my main GPU only. It won’t start with my main GPU only unless the system is set up with it as secondary.

It is kernel 6.5.6 I think. So lower kernels dont matter. Having it as primary GPU doesn’t work.

So having the GPU in an expansion from a pciex1 works with another GPU as primary on install and first boot. Then using my good GPU as primary GPU and only GPU in the system works fine after that.

But the system doesn’t do any after installation setup or config.
So I have to do everything manually.

You can run Initial Setup manually from the dom0 terminal:

sudo /usr/libexec/initial-setup/initial-setup-graphical

I find it surprising hat it won’t work with my GPU out of the box like it should.

Yet doing what I did works.

Very odd I think. ?

I don’t know what’s wrong with this GPU in the Qubes OS installer, maybe something in the installer’s config is not to its liking.
I guess you should open an issue on github with the logs from /tmp directory of the Qubes OS installer when it fails to boot with your GPU.

But it isn’t just the installer…

The Qubes OS 4.2.0 RC4 installer didn’t work with your main GPU, but worked with another GPU.
The Qubes OS 4.2.0 RC4 installed with your other GPU worked with you main GPU.
So it should be easier to find the difference between the installer and installed system configs that is causing your GPU to not work in the installer compared to searching why it doesn’t work in both latest installer and installed Qubes OS (from the laptop).

None of the installers worked with the GPU… Should I get the logs for all the versions of qubes to help?

I think it’s better to post the logs with the latest installer for a start.

Also, about this:

Maybe the issue with this was that you have sys-net/sys-usb autostart enabled and the BDFs of the PCI devices assigned to them that were Network/USB controllers in your laptop are some other critical PCI devices in your desktop like your GPU, so when sys-net/sys-usb is autostarting on the desktop, it’s crashing the system because it’s trying to attach the wrong PCI devices to them.
So maybe the Qubes OS installed on your laptop using latest Qubes OS installed would work as well.

In this regard, if there had been any guests installed or set up, even templates installed, then that could be a possibility.

But the wa I do it, nothing is installed. But still the system works nd I install manually after.

Does Qubes OS 4.2.0 RC4 installed on your desktop still work after you update it?

After update, it updates the kernel and doesn’t boot up.
But I can still go to advanced and run the old kernel up and works fine.

Ever since installing that version on my desktop using another GPU the installer now functions with my GTX1060 .

I have no idea what is going on. Does qubes write some code to the GPU or some other device Tha makes this stuff start working?

I did the installer check multiple times with the 4 GPUs I had before I did that install so I could get some work done and pay the bills.

The 3.2 installer still only gives me the text based installer that does not work though.

I am thoroughly confused about why things don’t work then now do after one successful installation.

If I use the NVIDIA Quadro or the AMD card it is fine.

But those I can only have one screen working at he moment. Where I need all 4. What AMD card should I upgrade to to have Qubes always work as well as able to have multiple monitors? I’m looking at running at least 8 monitors.

I can’t recommend a GPU that will work for sure. The best you can do is to get a list of GPUs that supports 8 monitors that you can buy and then search them one by one on the forum/mailing list/github issues for mentions that it worked for someone.

I can get one for 4 monitors on HDMI, so I’m not fussed about Tha side of things. Just having multiple GPUs working is the real key. Just thought you may have known if there was something in particular I should get or not so that there wasn’t these issues…
