Qualcomm QCNFA865 WIFI card missing, NO WIFI, I know this can be fixed!

Hello people,

My motherboard is MAG-B850-TOMAHAWK-MAX-WIFI

My motherboard provides drivers for Qualcomm wireless wifi and Bluetooth, which is what I use to download when Ethernet is the only option for internet; however, these drivers on the MSI site are only for Windows.…

Despite this, I still downloaded the drivers and firmware alike, but never actually installed them in Qubes. Because I don’t know where or how, but most importantly, i know this won’t work as the os is completely different. Plus I learned is that Linux has its own prebuilt drivers for Qualcomm called ath11k ath12k.

I’m stuck in a position because when looking for help i came across a solved troubleshooting for a similar matter has been done here: [SOLVED] Qualcomm QCNFA765 (ath11k/wcn6855) WiFi working on Thinkpad P14s Gen4 AMD

However, the difference is that in the troubleshooting reference, op was able to find their Wi-Fi card; for me, this is the problem. No matter how many checks I run to see and find my wifi card, no card is found; only ethernet realtak rtl8126 is shown during lspci checks and similar checks to locate wifi cards, pci and the like.

I did some troubleshooting on my own, like downloading Realtek RTL8126 Drivers as I previously didn’t know that RTL8126 is only Ethernet, Thus it didn’t matter as it would only connect via Ethernet cable when I need wireless wifi - qualcomm driver or ath11k.

I’m just not entirely sure how to approach this, how to even use the ath11k drivers to load my wifi card, as I’m sure, even with no tech experience, that my wifi card is simply not being picked up by the machine.

Currently, I’m thinking of troubleshooting this by just following the guide mentioned before and see what happens when I switch out the Wi-Fi card to my ethernet realtak rtl8126; perhaps that would fix the issue ?

What I’m also thinking tho, and now with a bit more clarity, is that ath11k or ath12k is failing to run as why my wifi card is also not being picked up. I come to this since ath11k is basically or is similar to, the Qualcomm wifi driver I would have downloaded from MSI if i where still using Windows.

Before I leave this sitting overnight, I want to thank all for reading this and taking the time to leave some suggestions for me to work around. no matter the case, i’ll leverage what i have to try make this work, Obviously qubes is still the wild wide west to me, but im not leaving yet, I havent rode my horse down old town road yet.

Hi QubesqUBESqubes

It’s unclear to me, where you run lspci and don’t see the Wireless card – is it in sys-net or in dom0?

sys-net will only see/list the Wifi, if the device is assigned to sys-net in Qube Manager. You can check the assigned devices by:

  • start Qube Manager
  • Select sys-net
  • Click “Settings” (top bar)
  • Select “Devices”
  • Check the “Devices always connected to this qube” and look for Qualcomm on the list

If you need to edit the list, you need to first stop sys-net (and any qubes that need it for network - eg. personal, work and sys-firewall).

dom0 should list the Wifi card - even if it is assigned to sys-net.

@ChrisA

The ath12k driver (for Qualcomm WiFi 7 chips) has known compatibility problems on Linux. While lspci will correctly detect these cards and you can assign them to VMs via sys-* passthrough, they won’t function properly without additional configuration.

Another possible solution for fedora 42 template:

$ sudo dnf downgrade atheros-firmware-20250311-1.fc42

(I can’t test it at the moment against my ath12k module.)

Hi WhiteShadow :slight_smile:

I am - sadly - well aware, that the Qualcomm cards can have problems on Linux/Xen[1] .. but as you wrote: lspci should still list them (iff they are assigned to the qube). So I only expected my commands to attempt to solve the first issue: “why doesn’t lspci show the card?”.
