Proton Mail and Proton Pass Icon do not appear

Dear Team

I did download ProtonMail and ProtonPass (.deb) from the official Proton Website. I did install these file in the Template VM. The installation went well.
I could add these installed apps on the AppVM and run these applications. But the point is: I cannot see the correct icon of Proton Mail or Proton Pass. It shows the cube icon (yellow color of cube) - personal (AppVM).

How came? Any hint?

I tried to modify in the proton-mail.desktop file on the TemplateVM:

Path: /usr/share/applications/proton-mail.desktop

Config Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Proton Mail
Comment=Proton official desktop application for Proton Mail and Proton Calendar
GenericName=Proton Mail
Exec=proton-mail %U
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/proton-mail.png
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Categories=Network;Email;
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/mailto;

The right icon is placed there: /usr/share/pixmaps/proton-mail.png

Thanks for your help in advance.

Kind regards,
AC

There are many ways to see this icon. One way is to reboot the whole entire system. The other is the refresh via the application tab of the setting of that qube. Then, click refresh application. It will show up in the menu. Then, select those and transfer them to the selected apps via middle control menu. Then, hit OK. It should show up within that qube category.

Thanks @HPOA909

It still does not work.

a) I did reboot the OS - and I got still the same icon (cube)
b) I also did refresh applications and it does not help
c) I also tried to move those apps from “Applications shown in App Menu” to “All available application” and then back. On that way the icon has still not changed.

Any idea?

Hi @ac.qubes-os ,

This need to retry many times for the icons to show. However, you need to install Proton Mail Bridge for your email machine template in order to work. Same goes to the Pass. Because, the icons are only store persistently in TemplateVMs only and will show once installed into the TemplateVMs only. Make sure redo the same process as I showed you after the installations within the TemplateVMs.

Hi @HPOA909

Thanks for your reply. Really? So I also need to install the Proton Bridge on my TemplateVM in order to work with the icons? Why is that needed? I thought, Proton Bridge is needed in case I want to use Thunderbird as e-mail client app then. I am not sure if Proton Bridge is needed?

There are a lot of guides for you. Here is one example for you to do those: Guide: split-Protonmail (offline send/receive qubes + pm bridge vm)

It is required to in TemplateVMs for the icons to show persistently without any annoyance to reinstall over and over again. As such, PMB is certainly needed for your TB to receive them securely via the PMB. Here’s the article of why you need it: Why you need Proton Mail Bridge | Proton

In those articles, you really needed the PMB for your TB to receive your Proton Mails because Qubes is all about security with privacy in mind. Therefore, you shall need the PMB to receive your emails solely because of privacy and security; you don’t want anyone to spy on you. @ac.qubes-os

Hi @HPOA909

  1. Thanks a lot for the guides. I know about that Proton Bridge. But I do not use Thunderbird e-mail client or like that. Maybe later, I will setup this with this guide. It is a good point!

My question was more: Why the ProtonMail Icon and ProtonPass Icon does not appear after installing in the Template VM.

These 2 apps are from the official Proton:
