Password and recommended packages for unman's Kali Core template

I have installed unman’s Kali Core template.

When I tried to install various packages using sudo, it asked for a password. What is the password?

Also, Kali Core is a bare-bones system with practically nothing pre-installed, making it quite difficult to use.

If anyone is using Kali Core, could you please share what packages or tools you recommend installing to make it more usable?

The template is minimal - like any minimal template passwordless-root
is not installed. You open a root console either with
qvm-console-dispvm or with qvm-run -q -u root --service $QUBE qubes.StartApp+qubes-run-terminal`

If you want to install passwordless-root you can.
@Atrate has pointed you to the right place for metapackages, or you
can pick and choose the tools you want. Aptitude is installed.

I never presume to speak for the Qubes team.
When I comment in the Forum I speak for myself.

I did these, following unman instructions:

  1. verified unman key
  2. verified template
  3. copied both to dom0
  4. installed the template

Then on my own:

  1. make a copy of the template using Qubes-Manager, just in case I break it
  2. created a app qube based on the template
  3. just in case, I gave it more private storage

Again following unman instructions:

  1. I run my app qube, and everything works

Still to do:
9. install tooling

How can i verify keys? Is there a tutorial with no steps missing on how to download it from uman? Because uman’s guide is missing several steps and assuming people already know how to do some thing.

I.m.h.o.

  1. download unman’s key to some app qube
  2. download unman’s template to some app qube
  3. import key into rpm
  4. verify

Again i.m.h.o. those are the steps he gave, but two important booby traps are to verify in an app qube (not in dom0 as this foolish servant) and to import the key into rpm.

Yes but how. These are steps for what to do but all of it assumes everything already.

I am writing a small guide and will post it here, wait a bit

Rookie’s guide to run Kali on Qubes OS
by Fatima Rookie Ethernal

I read this instructions:

https://qubes.3isec.org/pgp.html

I downloaded unman key from his GitHub TO AN APP QUBE:

I downloaded the kali-core template from here TO AN APP QUBE:
https://qubes.3isec.org/rpm/r4.3/templates/qubes-template-kali-core-4.3.0-202608282122.noarch.rpm

IN THE APP QUBE I verified unman key by running this:
rpm -q gpg-pubkey-c8c0c2ef --qf “%{PUBKEYS:armor}” | gpg --show-keys

and checking the hex signatures against the ones in:
https://qubes.3isec.org/Templates_4.3/

Again IN THE APP QUBE I imported unman key into rpm by running:
sudo rpm --import unman-complete.asc

Again IN THE APP QUBE I verified the template by running:
rpm -K qubes-template-kali-core-4.3.0-202608282122.noarch.rpm

I copied both key and template to dom0 by running this in dom0:
qvm-run -p YOUR-BLOODY-APP-QUBE ‘cat /home/usr/YOUR/BLOODY/PATH/qubes-template-kali-core-4.3.0-202608282122.noarch.rpm’ > YOUR-BLOODY-TEMPLATE-NAME
qvm-run -p YOUR-BLOODY-APP-QUBE ‘cat /home/usr/YOUR/BLOODY/PATH/unman.asc’ > YOUR-BLOODY-KEY-NAME

Now in dom0 I imported the key again:
sudo rpm --import /YOUR/BLOODY/PATH/YOUR-BLOODY-KEY-NAME

Then I installed the template by running this in dom0:
qvm-template --keyring /etc/qubes/repo-templates/keys/YOUR-BLOODY-KEY-NAME install /YOUR/BLOODY/PATH/YOUR-BLOODY-TEMPLATE-NAME

Again in dom0 I made a copy of the template, just in case I break it:
qvm-clone YOUR-BLOODY-TEMPLATE-NAME YOUR-BACKUP-BLOODY-TEMPLATE-NAME

Using the graphical Qubes-Manager, based on YOUR-BLOODY-TEMPLATE-NAME, I created an app qube named YOUR-BLOODY-APP-QUBE

Again using the graphical Qubes-Manager, I gave it more private storage, just in case

Again from dom0 I run my app qube, and everything works:
qvm-run -q -u root --service YOUR-BLOODY-APP-QUBE qubes.StartApp+qubes-run-terminal

now in YOUR-BLOODY-APP-QUBE run apt update & apt upgrade

Still to do: install tooling

Hey @Menaby0 did you try it?
