Linux kernel in QubesOS

So, it seems like debian 12 “bookworm” will come with linux kernel 6.1 LTS. When it gets released, and if I can do an “in-place” upgrade of my debian 11 templates, are my new debian 12 templates going to use linux kernel 6.1?

How does new linux kernel support get distributed in qubes os?

Only if you opt to use the local kernel, as opposed to that provided by
dom0.
The default is to use kernel provided by dom0.
Configuration option in settings → advance tab, or qvm-prefs

kernel-latest from the testing repository is at 6.2
Qubes provides updated kernels for use in qubes as part of standard dom0
updates.

In regular AppVMs & Template VMs kernels generally come from dom0 and are managed via dom0 updates. There are ways to use the in-VM kernel though (see the Qubes doc).

Standalone VMs use the in-VM kernel.

So no, your templates will use the kernel provided by Qubes OS dom0. That one however may be newer than the one provided by the distro though.

when can we expect to see kernel 6.1 in QubesOS stable? QubesOS v4.3? or v5.0?

i think 4.2, qubes is moving fast now.

No reason to think it wont migrate to current for 4.1. if the transition
to 4.2 takes a while.
