Latest Windows 11 support on latest Qubes without QWT

Hello,

I desperately needs fully working updated Windows 11 for my job (Visual Studio mainly) do you think it is possible to use Windows 11 via RDP only (so dont use QWT) and be able to work productively?

As productivity I mean mainly:

  • copy paste text
  • copy files from/to Windows
  • good resolution (should be solved via RDP probably)
  • no lagging
  • no crashing
  • no inability to use important stuff like GUI buttons
  • be able to shutdown VM
  • etc…

I am not using Qubes now so I cannot try by myself.

Also if I understand it correctly, it is better to create golden image and this image clone and use, it should be better for Windows then trying to create custom template vm from hvm, right?

Thank you!!!

I read on the forum that @GWeck or @Sven have some experiences, maybe they can share their opinions

Sorry - I have no experience with RDP.

To me, your goal isn’t clear enough. Is it that you want to fully deploy Windows, or Windows without qwt or Windows via rdp. For the latter 2, you’d have to explain why exactly, and that might help someone to better assist you.

Thank you for your message and I am sorry for misunderstanding.

I would like to use Windows 11 as HVM without QWT. Goal is to have stable Windows 11 for devops.

If my understanding is correct, if I dont install QWT I will have issues with screen resolution, copy paste etc. So my idea is to use only RDP (from lets say sys-rdp qube) to access this HVM which should solve issues (?).

And my answer is, if this is enough or I can expect more problems with Windows 11 without QWT, like crashes, lagging, issue with shutdown etc.

Thank you!

What made you think you wouldn’t have “stable Windows 11 HVM” with qwt installed?

Not unstable but because of this qubes-secpack/QSBs/qsb-091-2023.txt at master · QubesOS/qubes-secpack · GitHub it doesnt make sense to install it now, before this will be fixed

Now it’s clearer. Well, my Windows 11 isn’t "security-sensitive… " and I am not one of the "… users with especially high security requirements " so I’m fully deploying the qube with qwt 4.1.69. Which serious user would consider combining words security and Windows anyway…

Especially considering: “…If the Xen Project’s Windows PV Drivers were compromised at build time, all Windows qubes that have Qubes Windows Tools (QWT) installed may also be compromised. If the drivers were not compromised at build time, then there is no known vulnerability.

It was never confirmed they were compromised as far as I know. I’m not pledging you to use it, I’m just explaining my perspective.
