When I try to add a VPN using network-manager-openvpn-gnome, it shows “insufficient privileges.” Even setting it to unrestricted mode doesn’t work. Is anyone using a VPN with Kicksecure? Please tell me how you solved this problem.
No, maybe @solene can help you.
I gave up with openvpn as it’s a shitshow. You certainly need to be a group plugdev for your issue.
The thing with openvpn is that you can have multiple methods for authentication and it’s hard to write a guide that will cover all cases, and storing credentials is a struggle depending on the template, I had the same issue with Debian 13 minimal.
running the nm-connection-editor as root can be a workaround for the permissions issue - but that’s not helps if any dependency is missing from the template.
I suggest to try first using the offical fedora (not the minimal) template. If you manage to make it work there, then you can try with any other template (including minimal) you prefer.
You can fix it easily:
- Open network manager and EDIT your connection.
- Go under GENERAL tab
- Uncheck “All users may connect to this network”.
- Save
Saving may erase some saved settings like user certificate, private keys etc. so you may need to re-add them in your connection configuration after you save it.
Kicksecure prevents modifying some system settings through policykit … and so it will not work when the connection applies system-wide.
