Installed sys-audio, now no sound

I use an external audio card that I plug into qubes.

Normal I will plug in audio card through the sys-usb and attach to VM so able to use.

Now I can’t do. I attach to sys-audio and open VM to play audio and hear nothing.

If I attach directly to VM then sys-audio just has dummy output and I hear nothing.

What do I doing wrong?

also i have two volume icons in the xfce panel one is sys-audio and one is pulse-audio panel, both show same icon. is this part of problem? regular pulse panel icon shows on and off, then “audio mixer” under that, sys-audio has drop down with many menu options including default server default sync and more

When I attach it, the input to the usb device shows up but the output doesn’t. The output is listed as a device but it isn’t showing as option for selecting for output of audio

this is too hard.

how do i uninstall sys-audio? extra security is not worth lack of usability

Are you able to play audio in sys-audio with your USB audio device attached to sys-audio?
You can try it by running this command in sys-audio terminal:

pw-play /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

If you attach your USB audio device to some other qube (not sys-audio) and try to play audio there then you won’t hear anything?

That’s normal, first one is for sys-audio and second one is for dom0.

Open the Volume Control window in sys-audio and make a screenshots of the tabs there to understand what do you see.

You can set the audiovm back to default instead of sys-audio:

qubes-prefs -D default_audiovm

Remove the qrexec policies and remove the sys-audio qube.

We actually don’t know anything about your sys-audio and if you searched forums and what did you try.

So, these might help

(whole topic actually)

pw-play /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
bash: pw-play: command not found

I can attach the USB and hear audio now, but there’s nothing showing on the meter for sys-audio. It seems like sys-audio needs to use an internal audio device and can’t use an attached USB device.

You can try this one:

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

You can attach the USB device to sys-audio and hear sound from it when play audio in sys-audio?

Can you make a screenshots of the Playback, Output Devices and Configuration tabs in Volume Control in sys-audio when you connect USB device to it and you have some qube that have sys-audio as audiovm started after sys-audio as well?

Thanks for jumping in, because I was replied but it’s hard for me to help when I don’t know what steps I suggested were taken, and on which step hurdle was non-passable.

I can attach the usb audio device to a qube and hear from the usb audio device (which is external soundcard)

i do not hear it from sys-audio

does sys-audio need the device listed in devices attached to it? since the usb device can’t be on this list, sys-audio won’t work

i also don’t know how to define sys-audio as the audio vm.

Sometimes I can’t shut sys-audio down because it says other Qubes are using it.

For the screen captures, I would needs to use dom0 for this and then copy images from dom0 to other Qubes to delete metadata and only show information about my system. I am still not familiar with cat commands. This will take me an extra hour I shouldn’t spend on this today.
