How to: Diagnose Qubes-OS Instalation Disk Boot Issues?

A Lenovo Thinkpad W540 will not boot off a Qubes_OS 4.2.3 Installation disk. It starts to boot and then reboots. (Please see Qubes-dist-upgrade (4.1 to 4.2) Details for other related questions)

I want to diagnose why the installation disk boot fails to boot and would appreciate any relevant advice.

After the boot failure I tried the “Troubleshooting - verbose boot and installation Qubes-OS R4.2.3” menu option and this is an abbreviated annotated version of the video recording I made of the output:

  [ 15.2225581] audit: type=1130 ... msg='... res=success'

  Kernel panic screen

Please note the garbage text references, Blank Screen and the fact it ends with a kernel panic.
The garbage text predominantly has accented characters and those characters mostly are based on G,L,I,k,g,N,n,r,H,h,…

Is this garbage text normal? I note that this garbage text seems to come shortly after “audit”.
Is it possible to:

  • pause and resume the boot process?
  • save a log file?

I did not use any command line switches in GRUB. Is there anything that I should try?
