How can I reduce fan activity of my laptop?

Hi,
I very much like Qubes OS. The only problem I see is that the CPU
seems to be very hot - even when I do nothing. The result is that the fan
is more active - which I do not like because of the noise.

Are there any ideas how to save some more energy with Qubes OS?
I have Kernel 5.9.14 and everything else is fully updated.

Basics, first. Are you shutting down the qubes when you are no longer using them?

This is pretty vague. How about a bit more rigor in problem identification:

  • System age; & when did you last blow clear the cooling vents?! :slight_smile:
  • System config, esp. CPU, memory, disk or SSD, any other possible power culprits
  • Presumably you’re not in a hot, humid location where the fan can be expected to run?
  • Shutdown and let the system cool
  • Boot, log in, don’t open any qubes (other than your autostart ones, obviously), & wait a bit
  • Hot and fan crazy already?
  • In a dom0 terminal, xentop -f, & hit “s” 3 times to sort by CPU
  • In another dom0 terminal, top
  • If system stays cool, open your apps/qubes one by one until the problem occurs
