Whoops. A critical error has occurred. This is most likely a bug in Qubes Manager
OSError: [Errno 5] I/O error ‘qvm-appmenus’ at line 1769 of file /usr/lib/python3.13/site-packages/qubesmanager/settings.py
Error appeared when creating kicksecure-18-dvm (maybe just a coincidence).
After that I could not press buttons, system froze. system does not start after reboot.
Qubes 4.3 with KDE. KDE installed from qubes doc guide. Yesterday KDE froze and I forcibly turned off the system with the power button. After that Qubes os started 2 times without problems.
Not an expert here, but “Buffer I/O error” looks like it is coming from a very low level of the kernel, where it is getting data from the disk. I am guessing a hardware problem with the disk, and not a Qubes problem.
Do you get always the same “logical block” number?
Bad cables often give random behaviour. For other bad hardware, it depends.
Are you able to “do what it says”, and press enter to get a simple prompt?
Then maybe dmesg | less will let you search for errors.
Do you have any reason to suspect your disk(s)?
We have no idea about your hardware, or other details.
If you can turn off/unplug, and open the PC, you can try to replug disks/cables.
If you have a live Linux system you can boot from USB or DVD, then you can look for problems using ```sudo smartctl -a /dev/<your hdd/sdd/nvm>
After starting now, I cannot start the qube manager in KDE - it closes immediately, and also some sys-qubes do not start. I went to xfce and rebooted the system. Everything seems to work fine in xfce after a reboot.
@phceac I think my ssd is ok, I bought it 7 months ago. but I didn’t mention that yesterday KDE froze and I forcibly turned off the system with the power button. perhaps it also had an impact. I like KDE, but it seems like KDE already has problems in 4.3, I’ve been using qubes for 8 months and everything worked fine. I clean installed 4.3 a 2 weeks ago and everything worked fine. but then I installed KDE 5 days ago and problems started - bugs with changing the keyboard layout, freezes and this critical error
Hhmm again a new critical error. And again when trying to configure kicksecure-dvm. But this time it was not the qube manager that was failing. the last thing I saw when the system froze and the buttons did not work - qubesd.service error. @adrelanos I can send you the log data if you’re interested. Write what commands I should enter in dom0. Not sure if this is a kicksecure problem. I think it’s KDE or maybe my sdd (but now system works good)
I think that could cause low-level problems like your “Buffer I/O error” when you kill the power, but I really don’t know during startup.
I grepped through some old logs and I see that - almost all the times I have those error messages - they seem to be from badly connected USB disks and memory cards. Real hardware problems when I had bad USB power on my main (not Qubes) machine, followed by i/o errors. My money is still on hardware, not software - but I’m very good at being wrong.
I will just say one thing - it’s always a good time make sure your backups are good, and regular…
I don’t think this is related to Kicksecure. Any buffer I/O errors during boot are either hardware issues or maybe dom0 software issues. Kicksecure plays no role in that.
