I’m trying to share my personal hotspot from an iPhone 11, hotspot shows up and I successfully connect to it, but no internet access. What’s wrong? Please help
I presume your Qubes install will usually connect to Internet.
I presume your IPhone can. By itself. Connect to internet with its cellular data connection. And it is reasonably quick in loading web pages.
iPhone Hot Spot only does its interconnection to another device for. Thirty seconds. One minute. ?? After the Hot Spot is turned on. Again.
Turn Hot Spot off on iPhone.
Turn connection on computer off.
Then back on.
Turn iPhone HotSpot. On.
Click on the two red. Terminals.
Make sure u have the correct PW.
I once had created a HotSpot password. With a blank as the first character. Which I did not recreate on laptop. I personally have made nearly every dumb mistake that could be made.
Anyway. Maybe reset HotSpot password to something simple.
Best wishes.
If this does not work. Tell us what parts of your interconnection that work in what ways.
Some folks in using public WiFi have problems connecting thru some webpage that will not load.
Something you have to click thru but is free.
Like Starbucks garden wall. Webpage does not load up for you click thru.
I use disposable Qube. Start Firefox.
To detect if the Internet connection I am using is working in a quick way. I eliminate whether my connection is slow. Or whether the webpage is down at that moment. .
Enter a DNS server. Like.
1.1.1.1 for cloud flare.
Or 8.8.8.8. For Google.
I am in US. User may have different DNS available. That is more local.
Some folks have setup, in their Qubes, or browser an encrypted DNS.
Then a webpage that I know usually works.
Like yahoo. Which I stopped using because I was afraid of clickbait malware.
Now I have qubes to keep malware like that off my computer. Although I fear something will try install itself. In the boot. Which I do not see documented for Qubes.
I forgot another possible hang.
I had a VPN. I did not login. Then there was the other time. My VPN subscription days ran out.
Some VPNs can become slow to load webpage.
I’m new to qubes. I have successfully connected to both home Wi-Fi and airport Wi-Fi before.
iPhone can connect to 4G internet by itself, have also successfully used it to hotspot to an android phone.
I have tried several times to disconnect, restart devices, change password, change hotspot name. Still doesn’t work.
I am currently in Australia, do not know how to set up DNS. Looking through qubes tutorial and the commands like /etc/resolv.conf get message permission denied.
I’m losing my shit
Im not using VPN
Appreciate further help
If it is a new iPhone, you probably have AppleCare, who could help with this.
Else perhaps, search, ask on (free to use) an Apple Forum.
If you did not alter DNS, not likely the problem. My suggestion of Typing in a DNS number to see if you get the webpage for the DNS, is, really it is the fastest way I know of to verify the internet on the computer is working.
Some webpages can take some time to download. In my experience 3G data is not very fast.
I guess you have already asked your cellular company support.
Depending on your resources, and is easiest for you to do.
For me it would be easy. I would start a USB of Live Ubuntu, or Live Mint Linux. That removes the question of what in Qubes is not working.
and the Ubuntu Forums could be used to be the knowledge resource on the issue.
I have tried a friend’s hotspot from android, galaxy s25, which worked successfully. So both public and private Wi-Fi’s and android hotspots work. Should I assume it’s something wrong with my phone or carrier, or does qubes have some safety feature that makes iPhone connections problematic? I’ve already called my phone company and they say it’s not their fault since the internet works in the phone…
