GUI freezing the whole OS during window resize

Hi,

I have been experiencing this for quite a while and it is terrible.

I grab the edge of a window (e.g. a browser) and drag it e.g. to the left to resize. Suddenly the whole UI freezes and becomes unresponsive, like during an overload. Even switching to console doesn’t work. It doesn’t happen always but when it does it is a disaster.

The only way out of this is hard reset (and potential data loss).

I suppose it has something to do with the lack of GPU acceleration but that still is not a valid reason to freeze the whole OS.

Have you experienced this?
Any bug reports?
Workarounds?

You can try hiding window content when resizing.

System Settings > Window Manager > Advanced
Hide content of Windows: When resizing

You can try hiding window content when resizing.

But then I won’t be able to see how much I actually need to resize (which is based on the content that also auto-fits dynamically).

As @renehoj wrote, I always have the “hide window content when resizing” setting on, and am 95% sure that it is the recommended way of doing things, in order to avoid a well known and unfixed (or un-fixable) Qubes bug.

Edited to add: the assertion about the Qubes bug is from a thread on this forum, from a couple of years ago.

Edit2 to add: it was @renehoj who wrote it, back in 2024: quick-quality-of-life-improvements
