Generic VM and QWT optimizations for Windows 10+

Win7 ESU ended last summer :frowning:

Edit: split from Windows 11 Seamless Mode Possible in the (Near?) Future?

Yes, but it lacks telemetry and isn’t subject to ‘AI’ shenanigans, while executing most Windows programs (in a typological sense, not necessarily all current versions). Better hardware support isn’t that much of an argument in a VM. What advantages do you see in using newer versions?

Win ESU may be superfluos for Win 7 if you keep it away from external network contacts. And then you’ll have the best Windows that’s available today - constructed before Nadella fired his QS people …

I now have Windows 10 and 11 running with acceptable performance - if I give their VM at least 16 GB of memory. I regard this as a (bad) joke: Why do these crummy systems need such a huge amount of resources? This just shows their lack of efficient programming!

I wonder how many of the bottlenecks could be resolved by generic scripts that optimize Windows for general VM usage, e.g. disabling eye-candy and unneeded services, and how much is there still to be optimized on QWT side to make the Xen and libvirt integration better - for example to address this issue. And yes, I still remember to someday check out my own reported issue.

Definitely shouldn’t require 16 GB, since my Windows 10 uses 1.2/4.0 GB of memory when idle, though maybe I should also try the Microsoft Office version as in the screenshot to see for myself.

I can see that the conversation is getting a bit off-topic, since it’s not about the seamless mode in QWT. @parulin-mod, could we split the thread?

Yes, starting from where? What would be the title of the new thread?

Next time, you can mention @moderators instead of just me

Apologies, could have sworn there was no hint for the group ping when I typed “@mod”.

Maybe we could start from Windows 11 Seamless Mode Possible in the (Near?) Future? - #11 and have a title like “Generic VM and QWT optimizations for Windows 10+”?
