Default /boot/efi too small for updates on 4.2.0R?

[SOLVED]: As Qubes at default full drive install does not include formating the drive, and adds to existing EFI partition, the issue was caused by that the previous Windows install only had allocated 100MB for the EFI partition. Solved by deleting /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft.

I believe I used the default partitioning when installing 4.2.0R, encrypted file system. If so, it allocates only about 100MB for boot/efi which results in update failing.

Updating dom0 is now failing with the error:

Error: Transaction test error:
installing package xen-hypervisor-2001:4.17.3-4.fc37.x86_64 needs 2MB more space on the /boot/efi filesystem

df -h in dom0 reports that /boot/efi is (only) 96M, 70M used, 27M available.

I assume with my limited knowledge I will have to do a complete reinstall(?).

If 96M is default, I suggest to increase it in future releases.

Hi. I see that the /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft folder is consuming 27M. Could I delete it as I am not dual booting nor using MS VMs?

Could it be as the PC had Windows 11 earlier, Qubes reused its EFI partition? I see that win11 has 100MB default EFI size. I expected all partitions to be removed automatically at install on full disk, but maybe that is not the case.

it seems the EFI partition is used by Windows, Qubes OS and fedora, if these systems aren’t installed anymore, you should be able to safely delete /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft and /boot/efi/EFI/fedora (it’s empty though) to only keep Qubes OS.

I see the same now, thank you for your input. fedora folder is empty, the Microsoft folder is dated from the day I first installed windows, then overwrote (I though) with qubes the day after. I’ll delete the Microsoft folder and hope for the best :slight_smile: Thank you for your effort! Next time I’ll format the drive before doing default full disk install.

Windows? EW! I always deep clean my drives with dd after I get them back from micro$h*t.

I had a smol EFI partition too at first, but that was due to me thinking I was smarter than the default partition layout during installation :person_facepalming:
