Dangerzone Installation Issues on Qubes

Sorry it doesn’t allow me to open a Dangerzone ticket in Github so hopefully someone can help me here. Or maybe its a Qubes issue, i dont’ know. I did all the research on the internet, Qubes and Dangerzone search for this error and nothing conclusive appears in the search results.

I’m trying to upgrade from v10 to v11 on fedora43. The following error appears.

Package “dangerzone-qubes-0.10.0-1.fc43.x86_64” is already installed.
Problem: cannot install the best candidate for the job

nothing provides dangerzone-insecure-converter-qubes needed by dangerzone-qubes-0.11.0-1.fc43.x86_64 from dangerzone

Then I installed Fedora44 and tried a new install of Dangerzone. I get the following error.

Updating and loading repositories:
Repositories loaded.
Failed to resolve the transaction:
Problem: conflicting requests

nothing provides dangerzone-insecure-converter-qubes needed by dangerzone-qubes-0.11.0-1.fc44.x86_64 from dangerzone
You can try to add to command line:
–skip-broken to skip uninstallable packages

I can’t upgrade from V10 to V11 on fedora43 and can not do a new install on Fedora44.

Does have any suggestions on how to solve this issue. Thank you for any help.

It looks as if there will be no support for Dangerzone 0.11 or higher, as it will be replaced by a native Qubes function.

Just to clarify what I meant:

  • Qubes never developed dangerzone-qubes, that is a Freedom of the Press package;
  • I am not sure Freedom of the Press will drop their Qubes package, they have a GUI, which Qubes doesn’t have, it is up to them to decide anyway;
  • There was desired to have dangerzone features in Qubes for a long time, but a native implementation is better for us.

Thanks for the bug report @rubberducky1 . I’ve mirrored this in our issue tracker, if you don’t mind: Cannot install Dangerzone 0.11.0 on Qubes · Issue #1545 · freedomofpress/dangerzone · GitHub. This was an omission on our side, unfortunately, and we will have a fix out early next week. We will also update our CI tests to catch such issues earlier in the future.

Regarding Qubes, it’s definitely supported from our side. Please send us any bugs you may find!
Also, I see a lot of nice progress on the Qubes’ native converter, that’s amazing!

Thank you all for the quick responses. I’ll keep an eye out for the fix.

P.S. Small rhetorical rant. Too bad pdf software can’t be made to just read text in a file without introduction of malware or making connections to the web.

Quick update: We just published the missing Dangerzone dependency (dangerzone-insecure-converter-qubes), and now Dangerzone should be installable once more. Let us know if you stumble on any other issue, either here or in the Dangerzone issue tracker (preferable, so that we don’t miss something). Cheers!

I just re-enabled my Fedora 44 template, running under Qubes R4.3.1. This enabled the update of Dangerzone to version 0.11, which worked without problems. I checked the new version with a 160-page PDF created from a PowerPoint presentation, and it worked perfectly, creating a safe PDF containing text from the presentation. So OCR works as well.
