Create a Gaming HVM

I don’t understand what you means by “it still attach to it” ?

I mean, dom0 is loading drivers to it like nouveau or snd_hda_intel

ok thanks! (you used French, was it on purpose? :D)

So my issue when loading the GPU driver in a VM is maybe not related to this

inside the vm, check the result of “sudo dmesg”. What driver are you trying to use ?

( oui, je voulais être sur qu’on s’etait bien compris )

I’m using nvidia driver, I disabled the load of “nouveau” within the VM. I tried with both Debian 12 and Fedora 38 and I end up with the exact same error when loading nvidia driver.

On my T470, it was quite easy to setup the passthrough, so I’m not sure what is wrong here.

The nvidia driver is borked, somehow it doesn’t like MSI-X interrupt. GPU passthrough not working on 4.2-rc4 while it worked on 4.2-rc3 · Issue #8631 · QubesOS/qubes-issues · GitHub
If instead of the nvidia driver you use the nvidia-open driver, it will work

I thought nvidia-open (the open source right?) was only available since 20x0 series? I’m using a 1060

edit: It’s not in the compat list GitHub - NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules: NVIDIA Linux open GPU kernel module source

sorry, you are probably right. So need to find why nvidia driver doesn’t like MSI-X

I have a RX 480 lying around, but I don’t want to use a separate screen, NVIDIA can easily do discrete rendering, not AMD. Maybe it’s time to try the virtualGL thing

Thank you very much for your help, I’ll stay tuned to the GitHub issue to try again later

What are the usual troubleshooting steps if the display stays black?

I solved most of my issues from my post Need help with gpu passtrough

I added some kernel parameters, blacklisted drivers (followed the instructions for the amdgpu on the archwiki).

sudo dmesg does not give me any error messages anymore(related to the gpu (I think?)) but now everything shows up in my primary display again(when I set pci=nomsi and from what I can tell the driver loads with the gpu properly). Running gnome-shell or xorg.sh runs and does not crash but does not display much (sometime completely bugged windows on the primary display). The display connected to the GPU only flashes when starting or powering the VM off.

No Idea what I should do jus’t cant get anything to my other display.

I mean it’s loaded correctly right? So I should be able to just start a X session right?

I’ve give it another try, I just updated dom0 and I guess it’s related to this problem

No luck for the nvidia driver

Got it working thanks to this. Was just to stupid to properly configure X.

Noobs like me would appreciate if someone could write a short guide on how to properly configure XFCE/GNOME with a standard fedora/debian template. And maybe even Wayland?

So far it’s working perfectly and in hindsight this was way to easy.

The only thing that sucks is that my GPU likes to scream like it gets tortured under load. (was a nice surprises, pls send help if this is related to some settings/drivers).

Once I’m able to have the nvidia driver to work again, I plan to write more detailed instructions. :+1:

I wish I wrote more about my previous setup because I don’t really remember what I did

If you follow Create a Gaming HVM and replace “i3” (my favorite WM) by “xfce4”/“xfce4-session”, it should work too

Pasted your script into my rc.local and it works like a charm. Just had issues with the xorg.conf

I never configured X manually and for some reason refused to open the archwiki for this.

BTW what about Wayland compositors? They should just work…? Would like to install Hyprland (the best WM).

How can I configure X so that it displays on the secondary display and also have the seamless integration with qubes os? Tried some stuff but can’t get it to work right now.

Also some tips for keyboard/mouse passtrough? I have a extra USB controller connected to the VM but they only work sometimes. (hope its not an issue with the controller, passtrough with the qubes-usb-proxy works fine)

If you take the file AOC.conf in the guide and modify the line “Driver” and “Modeline”, it should work. If it doesn’t, then there is an issue
