Can't read usb drives through sys-usb after upgrading to 4.3.1

Hello dear QubesOS team.

After upgrading my QubesOS on the ThinkPad x230 from 4.2.3 to 4.3.1 through a fresh installation I can’t read any usb drives no more. I tried to reinstall the whole system after recognizing the bug. But unfortunately this didn’t change a thing.

After the installation, I rebooted an removed all USB connectors prior the post installation scripts.

The system shows the following bug:

[sys-usb] Error

Failed to mount “removable”.

mount: /mnt/removable: fsconfig() failed: /dev/xvdi: Can’t lookup blockdev.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

I would be very pleased if you could help me out with this issue, I had no problems with running the OS in previous versions.

Best regards

CBF

Please write in detailed steps everything you did, what you clicked, what you run, its output.

Also open a terminal in sys-usb and run: sudo dmesg and find messages from around that time.

  1. Fresh reinstall through usb drive of the version 4.3.1
  2. Update of the fedora-43-xfce template
  3. Plugged in usb drive to restore my backup
  4. Tried to open the usb drive (labelled removable) in sys-usb which give me the bug in my previous post
  5. dmesg into a log file which I will append on this here

Ok, so device is in sys-usb and you are not attaching it to any other qube.

How did you try to open the device? What did you do, type, click?

On sys-usb

lsusb
lsblk
df -Th

That’s a known “feature” (or bug, depending on how you see it) of R4.3 - see here .

OMG people, use the Forum search before posting!!!

I didn’t find errors on dmesg.

The error message is different.

Failed to mount “removable”.
mount: /mnt/removable: fsconfig() failed: /dev/xvdi: Can’t lookup blockdev.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

VS

“Failed to mount. Not authorized to perform operation (polkit authority not available and caller is not uid 0).”

Unsure if it is the same problem.

Ok got it now. I just had to append the drive to another qube and I can read it. I wasn’t aware of this change, but it definitely makes sense.

Sorry for wasting your time and thanks for your help. Ben:folded_hands:t3::heart:

I still would like to know how did you try to open the device, was it via file manager or command-line? If command-line, can you show it?

I double clicked the icon named “removable” in the file manager (GUI) and there has been a pop-up windows displaying the message in my first post.

Can you try this and see if it fixes? 4.3: Disable minimal-usbvm service in sys-usb to use external storage. Would be nice to know if it is the same cause or different issues.

Since it seems to be part of the plan that QubesOS acts like this I’m fine.

I would prefer not to try, because my problem is solved. Thanks again for your help!
