Can't install Qubes

Hello!
I’m trying to install Qubes, but the installation gets stuck at this stage and doesn’t proceed. The laptop is a ThinkPad, which is compatible with Qubes. The installation works fine on another laptop. On the ThinkPad, it doesn’t want to go through, even though secure boot is disabled and virtualization is enabled. The disk is formatted.

What could be the issue?

Did you try to boot the installer with latest kernel? There is a separate installer GRUB menu entry for this.
What’s your laptop CPU/GPU?
Did you connect external monitor to it?
Try to add nomodeset kernel command line option in the GRUB boot menu entry like this:
Autostart troubleshooting | Qubes OS

I tried booting the installer with the latest kernel. It didn’t help.

I have an Intel(R) Core™ i7-8565U CPU and an integrated Intel graphics card.

I didn’t connect an external monitor; why would I? My laptop’s monitor is working.

The nomodeset parameter should be added at a different stage. I haven’t even reached that point. I’m stuck at the very beginning, after selecting the latest kernel. The installation starts and then stops, as shown in my screenshot. After that, the language selection should appear, but it doesn’t. The installation just freezes.

What other options are there? What could be the issue? Are there any settings in the BIOS that might help?

You can add it in the installer GRUB as well.
This option could be needed if you have NVIDIA/AMD GPU (main or secondary) but since you only have Intel iGPU then it shouldn’t be needed.

Remove rhgb quiet and add plymouth.enable=0 kernel command line options in GRUB to show the log, maybe you’ll see some errors.

I have Intel, so I don’t need to add it?

You can try it just to be sure.

Also check this:

I’m not quite sure how to do this.

I select the installation option with the latest kernel using the down arrow and press E. Then, there aren’t any lines like the ones shown here: Autostart troubleshooting | Qubes OS.

But there are other lines. Could you please provide step-by-step instructions on what to do after I boot the laptop from the USB and see the installation options screen?

Then, press the down arrow key multiple times to reach the line starting with module2.

Remove/add the kernel command line options in the first line starting with module2.

The thing is, I don’t have those lines. There are only three lines of text, not like in the guide from the link. Maybe I’m doing something wrong?

I’m stuck at the very first stage of the installation. I don’t have that GRUB editor. I haven’t reached the point shown in the guide you shared. I plugged in the USB, selected the installation option with the latest kernel, and the installation isn’t progressing.

I also don’t quite understand how to do what you’re asking, as I haven’t reached that point yet. So please, I kindly ask you to explain step by step what exactly I need to press and where to enter it.

Intel Corporation WhiskeyLake-U GT2 (UHD Graphics 620) (rev 02)

This is my graphics card.

Remove quiet and add plymouth.enable=0 at this line:

I kindly ask you to please show me how it should look in the end.

After I make the changes, do I need to press Ctrl + X? Will the installation start then?

Just replace quiet with plymouth.enable=0.

Yes.

The installation moved further, but it’s still stuck at this point. It has frozen again.

Are these the last log messages that you see before if freezes?

Maybe try to disable HWP:

You need to add cpufreq=xen:hwp=off in GRUB at the end of the line starting with multiboot2.

The installation went well, thank you. But after rebooting, I’m being asked to enter the disk password. Then I get an error. I enter the correct password; why could this be happening?

I’ve installed qubes on three thinkpads with zero issues. The only time I’ve had a problem was when I didn’t do the installer with a completely wiped hard drive. I always start with formatting it MBR and fat32
