Disclaimer: I have NO experience with this machine. I do help with the
HCL reports and can compare it’s specs against other reports and hazard
a guess. It’s up to you to decide if that is useful to you.

Searching the web I found the following specs:

Currently there is not a single HCL report with an i7-11370H (Tiger
Lake), which means to me it is brand new and likely not well supported
by the version of Fedora that is running in dom0. Likely not even yet
with the upcoming R4.1 release.

The same goes for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU: not a single report,
because it’s probably too new.

The 16 GM RAM and 1TB SSD are sensible.

I am unable to find out what exact WiFi chip is used in this machine.
This I would strongly recommend before buying the laptop.

To me there are plenty of red flags and I would recommend you to look
for a machine that has a bit older specs. Unfortunately we do not have a
web-based query system yet for the HCL reports, but I can describe
briefly my setup so you may replicate and research yourself:

  1. Clone or Download GitHub - QubesOS/qubes-hcl: HCL reports for Qubes OS Project … now you
have all the .yml files in one folder

  2. Use an Editor like Visual Studio Code that allows you define the
entire folder as scope and start searching

I searched for “i7-11370H” “Tiger Lake” and “RTX 3060” … note that id
you have the PCI IDs (something like [8086:9bc4] ) you can search for
them too.

Or you could just go to the website and Ctrl+F …

Thanks Sven,

really appreciate it.

The whole reason I made this post is that I first searched on Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and also did not find anything. so I figured that it does not get updated that often and maybe someone from the community will be able to help.

My whole problem is that I like substance AND form. Meaning, for me it is not only important that the OS is good (qubes OS), but also that the hardware and the whole overall experience is enjoyable. (think macbook)

The problem with older notebooks which are “fully compatible” with qubes OS is that they are usually (in my opinion) hideous.

can anyone recommend a minimalistic, Qubes OS compatable, older notebook which has a nice and solid build quality?

I see.

We fixed that. Usually a new report shows up on the website within 2-3
days, often faster.

I used Macs exclusively before switching to Qubes OS. The main reason
was (as ridiculous as that might sound) the way Mac’s do font rendering.
I switched to Qubes for the security but font rendering is still very
important to me for some reason (I am a developer, not a designer). …
anyway, my point is: I get you.

There are some MacBooks on the HCL but they are truly dated and attempts
to run Qubes on more recent MacBooks have not gone to well unfortunately.

What about the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon?

Thanks for the suggestion. I dont really like the design of that though.

how about ASUSTeK ROG Zephyrus G14 ? I see it has almost all working in the HCL. Maybe that will be a good choice for me

I love the fact that it has no build-in webcam. @Alethia submitted a HCL
report with detailed install instructions just 15 days ago. And @unique
has also ordered this machine and is possibly already in the process of
installing Qubes OS on it. I assume you have seen this thread:

Sounds like a nice choice that’s already working and the support always
get’s better over time. When I got my laptop it required several manual
steps to get everything working with R4.0, but as of R4.0.3 it was all
working out of the box. … the same will likely be true for this
machine and R4.1.

I’d say: chat a bit with @Alethia and @unique and make your decision.
And if you do get it please submit your own HCL and experiences. Then
this could even become another “goto recommendation” like the X1 Carbon.

Thank you Sven,

wow, this is exactly the experience I wished. Friendly support and fast answers.
I will chat with Alethia and unique and will probably buy the laptop this weeks or so.
then set qubes up with my friend ( he has more experience with it) and then will submit our setup experience.
