4.3 installer not working due to new kernel + gpu

I have a GTX 1060 so any kernel after 6.6.42 doesn’t work, but I’m trying to upgrade from 4.2.4 to 4.3, however since the installer uses a new kernel it doesn’t really work. The installer GUI never loads.

What can I do?
I guess I need to make a custom installer somehow, with the old kernel that I use.
I have no clue how to do that.

I tried installing without the GPU but my motherboard isn’t letting me boot without my gpu but that’s unrelated to this forum.

I tried nomodeset and nouveau.modeset=0 as boot parameters which got me further in the install, but not to the actual installer GUI. It just stopped and my screen went to sleep after some time.

What CPU do you have? Old CPUs like 32nm and bigger Intel are not supported anymore due to XEN.

The CPU I have is supported by Xen. But my issue is the kernel in the installer not working with my GPU.

I have qubes 4.2.4 installed and I had to lock the kernel updates at 6.6.42 due to this. But idk how to make the 4.3 installer use 6.6.42 during the installation, as well as how to make it install 6.6.42 in the actual system / install.

Is there existing documentation on how to make the installer run an older kernel, while also installing that older kernel?

If so, I couldn’t find it. But that’s probably what I need to do for this issue.

Alternatively I do an In-place upgrade if it allows the kernel version to remain the same. But idk, I need info on this

Hey,
May you mention motherboard and CPU model? in case of AMD AM4 you can use AMD Athlon 200GE for installation process, it even supplied in same cases by AMD support.

Something special we should know about your bios setup? (use only dGPU, disable iGPU, bios updated?)

Did you try to install 4.3 with kernel latest?

Motherboard: asus Z270-A
i7 7700
Asus GTX 1060 6GB

I tried with all the options in GRUB including kernel-latest but they all gave the same result. Blank screen when it’s time for the anaconda GUI to load.

No. I have VT-d and VT-x ofc, but that’s it. I haven’t manually configured the iGPU to be disabled. I used iGPU before putting in my GPU (awhile back) and haven’t changed anything in BIOS. However now, if I take out the GPU and put the HDMI into the motherboard instead, my computer doesn’t wanna boot. VGA light flashes and the computer turns off then turns on and so on.

But I’m 99% certain the reason the installer doesn’t work for me is to do with kernel not working with my GPU.
I tested it on my 10th gen intel laptop with iGPU only and it worked completely fine.

Give a try to another USB port, for example if you place USB with Qubes image in front panel then try back panel (direct to motherboard).
If it USB3.x port, try boot from USB2.0 port.

Thanks for the help guys. I decided to just get my system to work without my gpu, so now I’m running on iGPU. The 1060 is like a decade old, and GPU is kinda pointless in qubes anyway, at least for my use case.

Just installed 4.3.0-rc2 without any issues on iGPU.
